Status for Bridgeport Trick or Treat Activities Remains Same as Date, Times Other Guidelines Spelled Out

It was about a month ago, on Sept. 14, to be exact, when Bridgeport City Manager Randy Wetmore announced at a City Council meeting that Trick or Treat would be taking place barring something unforeseen. He also said the public would be informed if there was a change in that.

As of this morning, there is no change. Trick or Treat in Bridgeport is still going on as planned.

Bridgeport Community Development Director Andrea Kerr said the topic is a frequently still discussed among Wetmore and has been discussed among Council and the status remains to go ahead with activities. With that in mind, there is no need to call the city to see the status.

It is taking place. Kerr said it will take place on the actual date of Halloween, Oct. 31, which falls on a Saturday this year. The time will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

“We’re still getting a lot of calls and contacts from the community about Trick or Treat,” said Kerr. “The phones have not stopped with trick or treat questions. It’s on.”

As Wetmore said in September, that could change. Kerr re-emphasized that everything remains fluid during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“If there’s something of a significant nature, such as the governor putting the state or this county, on lockdown, we’ll have to reevaluate,” said Kerr. “Nothing has changed (since Wetmore’s announcement earlier).”

Kerr said, for the most part, it will be business as usual. It will be up to the parents and to the residents to take part.

“We are saying if parents want their children to participate, it is their prerogative. If residents want to hand out candy, it is their prerogative,” said Kerr. “If you think about it, it’s always been that way.”

Kerr is asking residents to do what most already do. With numbers of those handing out candy potentially down due to COVID-19, the old standard is being asked to continue.

“If you are not participating in handing candy out, we simply ask that porch lights be turned off,” said Kerr. “That has kind of been the standard just about everywhere since I was a little girl, but we are hoping to make it easier on everyone by keeping your light off this year.”

Kerr said to the best of her knowledge all surrounding cities will be observing Trick or Treat at the same time. She said she reaches out to other cities and they collaboratively try to go with the same day and time.

“For the most part, the plan is to always have it on Halloween unless it falls on a Friday or a Sunday. Typically, Trick or Treat is not held on Sundays and Fridays usually conflict with football,” said Kerr.

To double check the times and to make sure the date is the same if you do not live in Bridgeport, please check with your local municipality on Trick or Treat times and dates.
