UHC 1 of 4 WVU Medicine Hospitals Honored by US News & World Report

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on August 06, 2026

MORGANTOWN – United Hospital Center in Bridgeport has been named by U.S. News & World Report to its 2026-2027 Best Hospitals as High Performing in several categories for Procedures and Conditions. This is the highest distinction a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals Procedures and Conditions ratings.

UHC was recognized in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease; ENT Surgery; Heart Arrythmia; Heart Attack; Heart Failure; Hip Fracture; Knee Replacement; and Lung Cancer Surgery.

UHC is one of four WVU Medicine hospitals honored by the publication for 17 procedures and conditions.

J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital received its seventh-consecutive ranking as the top hospital in West Virginia and was named High Performing in three specialties: Cancer, Neurology and Neurosurgery, and Orthopedics.

Other WVU Medicine hospitals were recognized as High Performing in the Procedures and Conditions category:

Princeton Community Hospital – Knee Replacement

Ruby Memorial Hospital – Aortic Valve Surgery; Back Surgery (Spinal Fusion); Colon Cancer Surgery; Diabetes; Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Surgery; Heart Arrhythmia; Heart Attack; Heart Bypass Surgery; Hip Fracture; Hip Replacement; Knee Replacement; Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Myeloma; Lung Cancer Surgery; Pacemaker Implantation; Prostate Cancer Surgery; Stroke; and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement

Uniontown Hospital – Knee Replacement

“This achievement is especially meaningful to our teams that give so much of themselves to serve the people of our state and region,” Albert L. Wright, Jr., president and CEO of the WVU Health System, said. “I see their dedication to excellent care demonstrated across our System every day, and I’m proud to see our providers and staff earn national recognition for a job well done.”

The annual Procedures and Conditions ratings are designed to assist patients and their healthcare providers in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or elective procedures.

U.S. News evaluated nearly 4,500 hospitals across 14 adult specialties and 23 procedures and conditions. Hospitals awarded a “Best” designation excelled at factors such as clinical outcomes, level of nursing care and patient experience.

“When patients face a major surgery or a chronic medical condition, having access to clear, quality data is vital,” Ben Harder, U.S. News’ managing editor and chief of health analysis, said. “A ‘High Performing’ rating means that facility outperformed a national threshold, giving families a reliable starting point as they consult with their doctors to choose the best place for care.”

To determine the Best Hospitals, U.S. News evaluated each hospital’s performance on objective measures such as risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications, and level of nursing care.

The Best Hospitals Specialty rankings methodology and Procedures and Conditions ratings methodology measure patient outcomes using data from over 800 million records of patient care.
