Off the Shelf: Library's Gradual Reopening Under Way as Staff Learning Ropes of New Safety Procedures

By Sharon Saye on June 03, 2020 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The library reopened for contactless pickup of materials on June 1 as part of the City of Bridgeport Re-Opening Plan.

You can call the library or place holds on the library’s Web site at www2.youseemore.com/bridgeport/.  We are beginning with 5 books per person since it turned out to be more time consuming than we thought to gather books for numerous people at one time. Once we get the kinks out of the process, we will raise it.

We will call or email you when your materials are ready and place them in a brown kraft bag with your name on it in the front foyer of the library.  When picking up your bag, only one person should enter the foyer.  You need to pick up your items that day or the next.  The library itself is closed to the public for the safety of the staff and our patrons.

Since we have been closed for two months our shipments from our book distributor have been on hold.  I just released the hold and boxes of new books will be heading our way.  Since I ordered in January all the best-selling books through the end of May, please be patient as we get these all processed once they arrive.

You may request books, DVDs, music CDs, and audiobooks as part of your five items.  Except for the newest DVDs, everything is due in two weeks.

Just from Monday's experience, it is obvious that everyone wants to read the same books by authors such as David Baldacci, Robyn Carr, John Grisham, etc., so we will be ordering more copies in the next few weeks.  Please remember that most of these books are available on the WVDELI in eBook and eAudiobooks.  All you need is a library card.

These new procedures are confusing for everyone including us, so please be patient.  We will be spending time re-configuring seating and computer access for the next phase of our re-opening in order to keep social distancing rules.

The library is changing to its former summer hours until Labor Day:  Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon until 8 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon until 5 p.m.  We are still here to answer reference questions and aid with our online services which are available 24/7.

So, this will be a learning experience for everyone, but the library staff is very happy to be back.
