Off the Shelf: Seasonal Stories Plentiful, and Winter is Certainly Part of the List, at Bridgeport Public Library

By Savanna Draper on December 18, 2024 from Off the Shelf

Winter is the perfect time to stay inside and curl up with a good book. Personally, I like seasonal reads that reflect my current environment. In December, my preference is to read books filled with falling snow, cozy fireplaces, hot cocoa, and some holiday spirit. I feel it sets the perfect tone to allow me to enjoy and immerse myself in the story. If this is something you like to do too, the good news is that the Bridgeport Public Library has many of these seasonal stories for you to check out. Some selections are below.

Always, In December by Emily Stone starts with a letter and ends with a love story. Every December, Josie sends a letter from her home in London to the parents she lost on Christmas night many years ago. Each year, she writes the same three words: Missing you, always. But this year, her annual trip to the mailbox is knocked off course by a bicycle collision with a handsome stranger; A stranger who will change the course of Josie's life.

The Christmas Bookshop by Jenny Colgan is the perfect holiday read filled with humor, wit, suspense, and a perfectly cast love triangle. Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia does not appeal. When Sofia reveals a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop, Carmen takes the job. Can she breathe some new life into it in time for Christmas shopping?

Mr. Dickens and His Carol by Samantha Silva reimagines the story behind Charles Dickens' Christmas classic. Charles Dickens is not feeling the Christmas spirit. His newest book is a flop, and the critics have turned against him. When his publishers try to blackmail him into writing a Christmas book to save them all from financial ruin, he refuses and a serious bout of writer's block sets in. On one of his night walks he meets Eleanor Lovejoy, who might be just the muse he needs. The story he writes about their experience will change Christmas forever.
Once Upon a December by Amy E. Reichert is a feel-good novel that brings tidings of joy. With a name like Astra Noel Snow, holiday spirit isn't just a seasonal specialty, it's a way of life. After a stinging divorce, Astra's yearly trip to the Milwaukee Christmas Market takes on a whole new meaning. She's ready to eat, drink, and be merry with a handsome stranger named Jack. After a swoon-worthy series of dates, some Yuletide magic, and the unexpected glow of new love, they must decide whether this relationship can weather all seasons.
