A popular and successful fundraiser is set for its return as A Round for the Reservation will take place on Sunday, Oct. 6 at Bel Meadow Golf Club.
The annual golf tournament benefits field improvements for the Bridgeport High School baseball field.
“We have to always pay for servicing our grass, the sprinkler system, getting field mix, you constantly have to do that,” BHS baseball coach Robert Sheilds said. “We want to re-do the mound on our field. Our batting cages on the third base side have been there around 15 years. We are probably going to have to check those out.
“We have to get our field laser graded this year. The warning track in the outfield and on the sides hasn’t been done going on six years, so we need to get material for the warning track.
“We are always looking for ways to improve the field. It’s an on-going thing ton continue to keep it one of the best natural grass fields in the state.”
This year’s A Round for the Reservation will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. It’s a four-man scramble setup and entry fee is $100 per player or $400 per team.
Prizes will be awarded for longest drive and closest to the pin. There will also be a catered lunch.
Mulligans are available to purchase and there will be a 50/50 drawing.
As important as the event is to the BHS baseball program, it’s also a good time for the BHS baseball family to catch up and enjoy a day on the golf course together.
“It’s a fun and entertaining event,” Sheilds said. “It’s always nice to see the former players, alumni taking part in it. Your current players, some of them and their Dads get a chance to go out and golf together.
“It’s become a nice day to have a father-son day. The last couple of years it seems like we have gotten a lot of father-son duos team up and I think that’s nice.”
