Anderson Wins 3 Events at Connect-Bridgeport Invitational: BHS Boys, Girls Each Finish Second

Bridgeport High School sprinter Lucas Anderson’s senior season began in impression fashion as he won all three of his events at the season-opening Connect-Bridgeport Invitational on Friday.
 
The Indians would go on to finish second overall in the team standings with 135 points. Morgantown won with 171 points. The girls team standings came down to the same two schools with Morgantown winning with 168 points and BHS the runner-up at 101.
 
Anderson took first place in the 100 with a time of 10.99, won the 200 at 22.42 and the 400 with a time of 52.03.
 
“It was a pretty good day,” Anderson said. “I was glad I went under 11 in the 100. I wish my 200 time was a little bit better but that 400 takes a lot out of me. That’s only the second time I’ve ever ran the 400.”
 
The BHS boys went 1-2-3 in the high jump. Ty Martin took first at 6-00, Charlie Brazier cleared 5-10 for second place and Parker Vincent was third, clearing 5-04.
 
BHS basketball standout Gabby Reep had an impressive debut high school track and field meet. She won the long jump at 15-04.50, finished third in one individual event and helped lead two relay teams to second-place finish.
 
“Track is a lot of fun,” Reep said. “I actually wanted to do it since I was a freshman but travel basketball got in the way.”
 
Giana Cox and Reep finished 2-3 in the open 100 with nearly identical times. Cox finished at 12.854, while Reep was at 12.858.
 
Reep also ran the anchor leg for the Indians’ 4x200 team which finished as the runner-up with a time of 1:57.65. She was joined by Eliza Perine, Jalin McKinney and Bailey Tomes.
 
Reep then ran first leg on the 4x100 team that ran a 53.90 that was good for second. She was joined by Perine, McKinney and Lee Ann Gaskins.
 
Cox was the runner-up in the 200 with a time of 27.24.
 
Also for the Bridgeport girls, the 4x800 team of Kaitlin Pappas, Mikaela DeMoss, Alea Matthis and Victoria Vash finished sixth at 11:47.57.
Grace Backus and Myleigh Smell went 2-3 in the 300 hurdles with times of 53.36 and 53.53, respectively.
 
The shuttles team of Hazel Jackson, Bria Smell, Carley Lattea and Presley Veltri came in fifth with a time of 1:21.15.
 
In field events for the BHS girls, Olivia Goldizen was fifth with a throw of 28-06.50. Abigail Stewart was the runner-up in the high jump, clearing 4-10. Gaskins joined Reep as a placer in the long jump, coming in sixth at 13-11.75. Sallyanna Hamrick was third in the pole vault, clearing 8-00.
 
Another 2-3 finish for the BHS girls came in the discus as Lyza Halterman was the runner-up with a throw of 96-06 and Goldizen was third with a throw of 93-08.
 
For the BHS boys, the 4x800 team of Sam Dodson, Troy Zorick, Quentin Collier and Ethan Smell finished third but placed second (only one relay team per school could have points going toward the team standings) with a time 9:15.03.
 
Dodson and Zorick were fourth and sixth, respectively in the 800 with times of 2:06.78 and 2:07.97.
 
Cam Hess posted a fourth-place finish in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 17.31 and a runner-up time of 44.27 in the 300 hurdles.
 
Martin gave the Indians a second Top 6 finish in the 100 as he finished with a third-place time of 11.58.
 
In the 4x200, the team of Cale Culicerto, Charlie Brazier, Hess and Parker Vincent finished third at 1:41.32. Culicerto was also third on the 300 hurdles.
 
Timmy Jeffers placed fourth in the 200 with a time of 24.21.
 
Alex Moses gave the BHS boys a fifth-place finish in the 400 with a time of 56.74.
In the shuttles, Hess, Martin and Culicerto were joined by Cole Parsons in running a second-place time of 1:06.06.
 
The BHS team of Dodson, Collier, Zorick and Jack Dotson came in second in the 4x400 with a time of 3:58.42.
 
Ryan Jones gave the Tribe a runner-up finish in the shot put with a throw of 41-02.
 
Tanner Hathaway placed fifth in the long jump at 18-03.75.
 
Morgantown’s 4x800 girls team of Irene Riggs, Sophie Renner, Amelia Summers and Jennifer O’Palko took first place with a time of 9:32.48. O’Palko also won the open mile with a time of 5:12.76.
 
Morgantown’s Josie Johnson won the 100 hurdles with a time 17.45. Also for the Mohigans, Izayah Everett edged Cox and Reep in the 100 for first place with a time of 12.64. Everett also won the 200 with a time of 26.50.
 
In the 400, Morgantown’s Belicia McKendall took first with a time of 1:02.68.
 
Robert C. Byrd’s 4x100 girls team of Brianna Alkire, Brea Lathon, Kyla Sutherlin and Brookelynn Washington captured first place with a time of 1:57.59. The Eagles’ Claudia Moore won the 3,200 with a time of 11:42.72.
 
Shady Spring’s Lilian Hatfield won the 300 hurdles with a time of 51.66. Hatfield also teamed with Allison Betkijan, Rachel Mann and Kylie Wahl to win the shuttles at 1:15.69.
 
Mountain Ridge’s Mary Delaney took first place in the 800 with a time of 2:19.19.
 
In girls field events, Grafton’s Jerra Halbritter won the shot put with a throw of 33-04. Fort Hill’s Maeleigh Plummer cleared 5-00 to win the high jump. Fort Hill’s Carly Bennett won the discus with a throw of 103-07. Morgantown's Morgan Ryan cleared 10-06 to win the pole vault.
 
On the boys side, Mountain Ridge, out of Frostburg, Md., went 1-2 in the 4x800. The winning team of Will Haberlein, Ackerly Mulcaster, Sean Strawderman and Owen Pratt posted a time of 8:53.28.
 
The Mohigans’ Hayden Casdorph won the 110 high hurdles with a time of 16.59. His teammate, Quinn Mudry, won the 1,600 with a time of 4:52.47.
 
Another win for the Mohigans came in the 4x200 as Isaiah Thompson, Noah Shepherd, Braeden Bellamy and Alex Tardos finished with a time of 1:34.92.
 
Mountain Ridge’s Ethan Wilt won the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.80.
 
Also for Mountain Ridge, Casey Culler won the 800 at 2:00.99.
 
Northern Garrett’ Ethyn Peck won the 3,200 with a time of 10:47.95.
 
In the shuttles, the Mohigans picked up another win as Andrew Tompkins, Seth Wiseman, Jacob Meyer and Casdorph finished with a 1:04.99.
 
Morgantown took one more victory in the final event of the meet winning the 4x400 as the team of Zachary Workman, Mudry, Austin Luo and Noah Shepherd finished at 3:51.15.
 
In field events for the boys, Mountain Ridge’s Nick Vitak won the pole vault, clearing 8-06.
 
Morgantown’s Keonn Mallett had a leap of 19-06 to take first in the long jump.
 
Fort Hill’s Carter Hess had a throw of 143-09 to take first place in the discus.
 
In the shot put Morgantown’s Will McGahey won with a throw of 46-09.
