Now, he’s ready not only for the challenge of the 2026 prep baseball campaign, but for playing at the next level. On Tuesday, Avolio signed to continue his academic and athletic career at Salem University.
“I loved the campus and I loved the coaches there,” said Avolio when asked why he choose the Tigers. “I love what their building. It’s a

good family.”
Avolio’s role, he believes, in the Salem family will be similar to his role this year with the Tribe. He said he’ll be used mainly as a pitcher but could also see time in the outfield.
“He started some in the outfield last year, but we used him as our number one left-handed pitcher when Blake Butcher was hurt and he showed his ability,” said Shields. “He pitched against some of the best teams we played last year including Cabell Midland, Urbana, Jefferson, University, Wheeling Park, and Frankfort. We’re expecting him to take on an even bigger role this year, and we know he can deliver.”
Avolio finished 4-2. Shields said that in 35 innings pitched, he had 41 strikeouts against just 16 walks.
When he takes his act to Salem, he’ll be about a 20-minute drive away from Bridgeport. Avolio said that weighed in on the decision-making process.
“It factored a lot into it because it’s really close to home, but I just love the school,” he said.
Avolio said Salem was not the only school showing interest in acquiring him to play at the collegiate level. He said Glenville State University and Potomac State College were also schools that he had contact with during the recruiting process.
“He’s like so many of his teammates, and it’s why Guy has success. He’s good natured, loves the sport of baseball, and works at it,” said Shields. “Those things matter, and it’s paying off with a chance to play at Salem.”
Avolio plans to study exercise science. He said he hopes to eventually become a chiropractor or physical therapist with his education.
