The Bridgeport High School tennis team wrapped up a successful 2022 campaign with a trip to the Class AAA state tournament.

The boys were led by a four-year No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles standout senior, Ty Gandy, a strong junior class of Paul Hong, Josh Jackson, Jacob Holbert, Elijah Daugherty, and sophomore Gregory Noone.  The depth of the team was evident all season long with Arkadi Bowles, Jenson Clayton, Quinn DeMotto, Eli Jones, Will Madden, and Brock Vincent.

In the state tournament Gandy defeated Musselman’s Tyler Kitner before being eliminated in the No. 1 singles quarterfinals by state runner-up Rohen Jones of George Washington.

Hong defeated Grayson Swisher of Jefferson prior to being knocked out in the quarterfinals in No. 2 singles by eventual state champion Samir Jones of George Washington.

Holbert defeated Heitam Belachami of Spring Mills and advanced to the No. 3 singles semifinals before being eliminated by eventual state champion Hurricane’s Taylor Curry.

In No.1 doubles, Gandy and Hong lost to the eventual state runner-up duo from Hurricane of Jacob Smolder and Zach Giertz in the quarterfinals.

In No. 2 doubles, Holbert and Daugherty lost to the eventual state runner-up duo from Hurricane of Taylor Curry and Domenick Hoh in the semifinals after defeating Jefferson’s Hoover and Kelly.

The girls team was led by senior Kylie Burke, juniors Ellie Hart and Madeline Shafer, and a very strong sophomore class of Robey Holler, Presley Carlyle, Ella Sorine, Alana Chen, and Kennedy Bealko.  The team has an excellent future with an excellent freshman class of Kit Booth, Madison Hansberry, Lily Lopez, and Mackenzie Reider.

In the girls AAA tournament # 1 singles Ellie Hart was eliminated by George Washington’s Angeline Almeyda.
