BHS Track and Field Teams Extend Harrison County Championship Streaks

The Bridgeport High School track and field teams recently extended two impressive streaks when they swept the Harrison County championships.
 
The girls won the county title for the 25th straight time, finishing with 167 points. Liberty was the runner-up with 160 and was followed by South Harrison (112), Lincoln (51), Robert C. Byrd (36) and Notre Dame (1).
 
For the boys, it marks 17 straight county titles. Last week they took first place with 223 points. Lincoln was the runner-up at 121 and followed by Robert C. Byrd (68), South Harrison (51), Notre Dame (31) and Liberty (20).
 
Senior sprinter Anaiya Jackson won a pair of county championships, taking first in the 100 with a time of 13.34 and the 200 with a time of 27.67.
 
The girls also won a pair of county titles in field events with Sallyanna Hamrick clearing 9-00 to in the pole vault and Shea Hefner with a jump of 14-05 to win the long jump.
 
Runner-up finishes came in seven events including four of the five relays. Hamrick was right behind Jackson in the 200 with a time of 28.57. Grace Backus won the 300 hurdles with a time of 56.17.
 
Olivia Goldizen took second in the discus with a throw of 89-00.
 
The 4x100 team of Gracie Courtney, Mia George, Landon Hall and Sierra Moses was the runner-up with a time of 58.98.
 
Moses was joined by Caroline Deniker, Bailey Tomes and Alexis Elliott on the 4x200 squad the crossed the finish line with a runner-up time of 2:04.55.
 
Deniker, Jackson, Tomes and Annie Dolan finished at 4:49.79 to place second in the 4x400.
 
In the shuttles, Backus and Elliott teamed with Jenna Wood and Alyssa Mazhar to finish second at 1:23.31.
 
The fifth BHS girls relay team had a third-place finish in the 4x800 as Deniker, Mira Blount, Madison Looker and Natalie Wagner ran an 11:59.39.
 
Blount was also third in the 1,600 at 6:11.25, while Looker was third in the 3,200 at 14:42.49.
 
Hamrick had a time of 13.89 for third in the 100.
 
Mia George was third in two field events – the pole vault at 6-00 and the discus at 77-06. Goldizen was third in the shot put with a throw of 27-04.50.
 
Fourth-place finishes for the BHS girls went to Hefner in the 100 (14.11) and 200 (29.60), Backus in the high jump (4-06) and George in the shot put (26-07.50).
 
Natalie Clingenpeel was fifth in the 3,200 (17:28.62) as was Backus in the 100H (19.80), Mazhar in the 300H (59.63), Hefner in the HJ (4-04) and Dolan in the PV (6-00).
 
Rounding things out for the BHS girls were sixth-place finishes by Dolan in the 400 (1:18.88), Mazhar in the 100 (20.16) and Wood in the HJ (4-02).
 
The BHS boys captured county titles in 11 events with Cole Bracken being a dual winner.
 
Bracken won the 400 with a time of 55.59 and the 800 at 2:09.57.
 
Lucas Anderson made it three-for-three in regard to wins in the 100 this season as he won the county title with a time of 11.34.
Kyle McCarthy won the 200 with a time of 22.86. Cam Hess took first in the 300 hurdles at 44.59.
 
The Indians won a pair of relay events and McCarthy teamed with Haden McCarthy, Andy Miller and Ty Martin in the 4x100 for a first-place time of 45.29. Also, Landon Burns, Sam Backus, Joseph Goddard and Sam Dodson joined forces to win the 4x800 at 9:38.49.
 
Four county championships came in field events for the Tribe with Ty Martin winning the high jump at 5-08, Jack Wood clearing 9-00 to win the pole vault, Andy Miller in the long jump at 19-03 and Grover Cleveland in the discus with a throw of 118-09.
 
Martin was the runner-up in the 100 at 11.69, while Anderson was second in the 200 with a time of 23.18 and in the long jump at 17-08.25.
Bailey DeMoss ran a 4.55.68 to place second in the mile.
 
The 4x200 team of Haden McCarthy, Cale Culicerto, Tre Hawkinberry and Kane Spencer was second with a time of 1:44.50.
 
Logan Anglin joined Burns, Haden McCarthy and DeMoss for a second-place time of 4:07.72 in the 4x400.
 
Miller capped a 1-2-3 finish for the Tribe in the 100 with his third-place time of 11.80.
 
Goddard was third in the 3,200 at 11:33.77, as was Spencer in the 110H at 21.07 and Culicerto in the 300 hurdles at 50.21.
Ian Teel had a third-place throw in the discus at 99-08.
 
Fourth-place finishes for the boys went to Hess in the 200 (25.52), Dodson in the mile (5:00.47), Brennan Cropp in the 800 (2:21.46), Backus in the 3,200 (11:39.17), Grafton in the shot put (35-04) and Landon Swann in the discus (98-07.50).
 
Spencer was fifth in the 300H (51.51) as was Teel in the SP (25-03.50) and Hawkinberry in the long jump (17-04.50).
 
Justin Wright was sixth in the 110H (23.17) and Swann was sixth in the SP (34-11).
 
Prior to the county meet, BHS competed at the Hurricane Invitational, featuring a strong contingent of fellow Class AAA schools. The boys finished tied for fifth with 47 points. Cabell Midland won with 149. The girls were eighth with 16.33 points, while Winfield won with 168.33 points.
 
The boys did win a pair of events in Hurricane with Anderson once again taking first in the 100 following a time of 11.58.
 
Also for the Tribe, the 4x200 team of Kyle McCarthy, Haden McCarthy, Hess and Miller won with a time of 1:37.41.
 
Martin was second in the high jump (5-10), Anderson was third in the 400 (11.83) and Kyle McCarthy was fourth in the 100 (11.83).
A pair of fifth-place finishes went to Martin in the 200 (24.27) and Miller in the long jump (18-02.75).
 
Finishing sixth for the BHS boys were Bracken in the 800 (2:09.36), DeMoss in the 1,600 (4:53.01), Burns in the 3,200 (10:59.84), Culicerto in the 300 hurdles (50.43), Cleveland in the discus (111-00) and the 4x800 team of DeMoss, Burns, Dodson and Backus (9:25.12).
 
For the girls, Jackson was fourth in the 100 (13.69), as was Blount in the 1,600 (5:59.03), Looker in the 3,200 (14:34.14) and the 4x100 team of Hefner, Courtney, Mazhar and Hamrick (57.47).
 
Hamrick also picked up a sixth-place finish in the pole vault (7-00).
 
The Tribe will be back in action on Saturday at home in the annual Harry Green Invitational.
