Bridgeport Post 68 Places 2nd in Area Tournament, Qualifies for States

Bridgeport Post 68 claimed second place in the West Virginia American Legion Area 2 tournament at Bridgeport High School this week, qualifying for this week's state tournament in the process.
Bridgeport, the top seed in the tournament, opened with a 16-6 blasting of the Doddridge County Summer Dawgs in six innings on Wednesday.
After falling behind 4-0 in the top of the first, Bridgeport scored four runs in the bottom of the frame and added two more in the second to take a 6-4 lead.
Doddridge tied the score again with single runs in the third and fourth, but Bridgeport broke the game open with six runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to bring the mercy rule into play.
Alex Greene got the win with five innings of relief work, giving up one earned run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Luke Rohrig was 4-for-4 with a double, triple, four runs and two RBIs in the leadoff spot.
Dom Fazalare added two hits, two runs and two RBIs and Anthony Julian doubled, scoring a run and driving in another.
Owen Sondericker finished 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs.
Bridgeport then defeated Morgantown Post 2, 7-3, on Friday in nine innings.
Morgantown scored a run in the first and led 1-0 all the way into the seventh, when Bridgeport scored in the top of the inning to extend the game.
Both teams got a run in the eighth, then Bridgeport put up five runs in the top of the ninth and allowed only one in the home half to win.
Sondericker nearly went the distance, pitching 8 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts, while Guy Avolio picked up the save, getting the final out.
Sondericker tripled in a 3-for-5 day, scoring two runs and driving in two more.
Julian added two hits.
Morgantown, though, got payback in the area championship game, scoring in the bottom of the seventh to win, 2-1.
Bridgeport's run came in the top of the sixth.
Collin Verbosky scored the run, going 2-for-2 at the plate, while Rohrig drove him in.
Avolio took the loss despite a strong start, giving up an earned run on six hits with four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
Bridgeport (18-4) opens the double-elimination state tournament against South Charleston Post 94 at 4 p.m. Thursday at Linda K. Epling Field in Beckley.
