The Health Plan Champions Cup honors the leading boys’ and girls’ athletic programs in each of the WVSSAC’s four classifications. Standings are based on performances across a variety of sports, with points awarded for success in state championship events. Teams are also awarded points based on the previous year’s graduation rate.

Class AAA Girls

Bridgeport took the top spot in the girls race finishing with 684 points, just ahead of Herbert Hoover’s total of 679.

The Indians opened the year with a championship in cross country, and added a semifinal finish in soccer an appearance in the quarterfinals in volleyball to round out the fall. Bridgeport took runner-up in cheerleading and finished fourth in swimming, and closed the year with a fifth-place finish in track.

The Huskies took home a title in volleyball and added runner-up finishes in cross country and swimming on its way to a second-place finish in the overall standings.

John Marshall finished third (579 points), ahead of a tightly-packed group in Winfield (489.5), Greenbrier East (488.5), Fairmont Senior (483), Shady Spring (477.5), and Robert C. Byrd (476).

Class AAA Boys

Bridgeport ran away with the top spot on the boy side scoring points in nine of the 10 sanctioned sports. The Indians finished with 977.5 points on the year.

BHS took the state title in soccer and posted three runner-up finishes during the year in cross country, swimming, and track. The Indians were semifinalists in baseball and basketball, were quarterfinalists in football, and finished fifth in golf and sixth in wrestling.

Winfield was the runner-up with 583.5 points. The Generals were third at the state track meet and added semifinal appearances in both tennis and basketball.

John Marshall and Shady Spring tied for third with 577.5 points, finishing just ahead of Robert C. Byrd’s total of 576.
