On Saturday, July 24, the inaugural North Central West Virginia Youth Football Camp will take place at the Robert C. Byrd HS football field from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.  This is a free camp for the regions elementary and middle school aged kids.

Local football trainer and former college coach, Mike Lopez will lead the project. Several area high school and college coaches, as well as current and former players, will be in attendance.

“We all have the ability to serve and give back to our communities with respect to our past experiences.”  Lopez continued, “This project is special because it is a collection of our local youth, high school and college coaches coming together for the kids in our communities."

“What makes my role unique is the fact that I am not affiliated with any particular football program and this allowed me to connect the dots and bring everyone together," Lopez continued.

The camp will focus on overall football fundamentals including offensive, defensive and kicking work. There are already more than 100 kids registered and the cut – off to secure a T-Shirt would be Wednesday, July 21st.

“As I have stated many times, this is an honor and a blessing for me to share with our kids all of the experiences I had as a college coach.  I am so humbled and thankful for everyone that has supported this project, as a donor or as an instructor”.

A special thank you to Robert C. Byrd, this year’s host school and its football coach, Josh Gorrell.
