Harrison BOE Honors Robert Shields for 1000th Win

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on June 06, 2026

During the Tuesday, May 2 meeting of the Harrison County Board of Education, the elected body recognized Robert Shields, the Bridgeport High School baseball coach for reaching 1,000 career wins.

Shields reached this historic mark May 5, 2026 with a victory against Robert C. Byrd in Clarksburg. Shields and Jefferson’s John Lowery are the only two baseball coaches in the state to have reached that mark.

In his 38 years of coaching Bridgeport, Shields has helped build a strong tradition of success, including nine state championships. He was also known for his long service, strong player relationships, and program growth. Shields has coached many generations of players, and many still stay connected to him and support his work.

Shields hopes to add another state title this coming weeks as the Indians will be one of eight teams looking to bring home the Class AAA state championship.

Editor's Note: Photo and information from the Harrison County Board of Education. Shields is shown with his sister and long-time Harrison County educator Cynthia Shaw.
