Mother Nature Goes Undefeated as Entire BHS Athletic Schedule for This Week Wiped Out

By Chris Johnson on January 10, 2025

Mother Nature went undefeated this week in high school athletics.

Actually, the streak can be traced back to last Friday as the first day of the seemingly endless winter storm forced the postponement of the Bridgeport boys basketball game at Lincoln.

Two more boys basketball games were wiped out this week, away games at Preston and Wheeling Park as the inclement weather has closed school in Harrison County every day this week.

The girls basketball team had a home game against Preston postponed and today’s game at Lincoln postponed.

All five of those basketball games have a rescheduled date: the BHS boys will play at Lincoln Feb. 1 (7:30 p.m.), at Wheeling Park, Feb. 19 (7 p.m.) and at Preston, Feb. 22 (3 p.m.)

The BHS girls basketball team will play at home against Preston on Jan. 27 (7:30 p.m.) and at Lincoln on Feb. 10 (7:30 p.m.).

“Every time there is a cancellation, they start stacking up, BHS Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Tom Sears said. “There are only so many days to get those in. It becomes a little bit of a juggling act.

“The safety of our kids and the coaches is our number one priority but it does become a hassle when you have multiple games to make up and battling for gym space.

“From a coaching standpoint, I understand the frustration. Early January is when you are starting to hit your stride. You’ve made it through the start of practice, the first couple of games and you get through the holidays. But then a storm comes through, closes school, cancels games and in some cases you can’t even get into the gym to practice.

“Fortunately, we are not the only ones going through this. The storm has impacted the entire state.”

One of the state’s premier regular-season wrestling events, the Winner’s Choice Tournament at the Fairmont Armory, scheduled for today and Saturday will take place without Bridgeport and any other Harrison County schools as school was called off for the fifth consecutive day and county schools not allowed to practice or play today or Saturday.

The BHS swim teams were scheduled to travel to Parkersburg on Saturday for the Penguin Invitational.

As of late Thursday, both the Winner’s Choice and the Penguin Invitational were still scheduled to take place without Bridgeport.
