North Marion Win Proves Pivotal in Latest WVSSAC Poll for Bridgeport as Tribe Moves up in Standings

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on October 09, 2019 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

If the postseason would begin today, Bridgeport High School’s football team would be in position to host the opening two rounds of the Class AA playoffs. That’s the results of the latest WVSSAC high school football power ratings that were released Tuesday.

The Indians, ranked No. 6 last week, moved up to No. 4 following their 35-20 win against North Marion Friday in Rachel. The SSAC poll, unlike the MetroNews poll, is used to determined where teams will be ranked in the postseason. Also different is that the SSAC poll is computer generated.

With four games left, the Indians find themselves in good position. Winning out could potentially put the Tribe up even higher. However, formidable roadblocks remain.

The Indians will play host to ‘AA’ No. 2 Keyser, 6-0, later this year. The Golden Tornado has dominated their foes this year to the tune of scoring 348 points and allowing just 7 and hasn’t allowed a point since their opening win against Robert C. Byrd. A win against KHS would give the Tribe a huge boost, but there is work needed to be done prior to that contest.

Fairmont Senior remains No. 1. The 5-0 Polar Bears are a solid No. 1 in the poll and if they maintain the position would host throughout the postseason until the championship round.

Poca, at 6-0, is ranked No. 3. Wyoming East rounds out the top five at 5-0. Bridgeport is the highest ranked one-loss team in the state and is currently ranked ahead of three unbeaten teams in ‘AA.’

Several other local teams would qualify for the postseason this moment. Lewis County, who lost to BHS in its first game of the season, has won four straight and is ranked No. 10. Liberty is 5-1 and ranked No. 12, while North Marion (4-2) comes in at No. 14.

The top 16 teams in each classification make it to the postseason. Robert C. Byrd, at 3-3, is ranked No. 20 and just outside the playoff field.

In Class A, Doddridge County is the state’s top-ranked team. The Bulldogs are 5-0 on the season. Cabell Midland, 6-0, is Class AAA’s top-ranked team.
