Sickles Named Volleyball Co-Player of Year in Big 10; Three Other BHS Players Earn League Honors

Bridgeport senior standout Violet Sickles has been selected as the Big 10 Conference Volleyball Co-Player of the Year and is joined by three teammates on the all-conference team.
 
Also for the Indians, Alexa Martin was named to the first, while Jacey Lucas and Cambria Freeman are second-team honorees.
 
Sickles, who had 448 kills, 58 aces, 25 blocks and 198 digs prior to the Indians’ state tournament match against Morgantown shares player of the year honors with Robert C. Byrd junior Avery Childers.
 
RCB’s Andrea Sturm was chosen as the Big 10 Conference Coach of the Year.
 
Martin had 267 kills, 48 aces, 52 blocks and 112 digs prior to the state tournament. Lucas led the Indians in assists with 667 and added 50 aces, 31 blocks, 146 digs and 31 kills. Freeman, the team’s libero, had 215 digs and 42 aces.
 
Philip Barbour, which won the Class AA state championship, had three players named to the all-Big 10 first team in Alyssa Hill, Emily Dennison and Averi Carpenter.
 
Other first-team selections are RCB’s Fran Alvaro, Buckhannon-Upshur’s Kendal Currence, Grafton’s Payton Shreve, Liberty’s Savanna Patterson, Liberty’s Gabby Floyd and Elkins’ Kaitlynn Stone.
 
Joining Lucas and Freeman on the second team are Philip Barbour’s MacKenna Halfin, RCB’s Emma Swiger, B-U’s Shelby McDaniels, B-U’s Caroline Frye, Grafton’s Aniesa Taylor, Elkins’ Olivia Guire, Lincoln’s Sydney McDougal, East Fairmont’s Blair Nuzum, Preston’s Emily Knotts and Lewis County’s Abby Hartley.
