From the Bench: Past Players, Community Members Get Chance to Own Piece of BHS Football History

By Jeff Toquinto on July 13, 2025 from Sports Blog

For perhaps the first time ever, former players and eventually members of the community will have a chance to own a piece of Bridgeport High School football history. And that chance starts for former players who competed from 2015 to 2020 as of today.

The “Voice of the Indians” Travis Jones has announced that a unique color combination uniform worn by the Tribe from 2015 to 2020 will be put up for sale starting today until there are no longer any uniforms remaining.

“These uniforms were worn during two championship seasons and two championship games,” said Jones.

Bridgeport sported the uniforms that are being sold in Wheeling in the 2015 and 2019 title games. BHS beat Tolsia 39-0 in 2015 and came back with a 21-14 victory against Bluefield in 2019.

After 2020, they no longer were worn and handed down to the freshman team of the Indians. They now have been deemed no longer usable and are for sale.

Jones said during that stretch of time there were just two sets of uniforms. The sets were white and red with additions that each uniform now typically has.

“This uniform was the first time they veered away from the gun metal gray accent on them,” said Jones. “This particular uniform was the first one, and probably the last one, that there was a dark gray accent included in the uniform.

“There was another addition during this time period with the uniform,” he continued. “The background of the arrowhead on the uniform was silver instead of being white as part of the home uniform.”

There is a reason beyond past their playing shape for selling them. Jones said the funds will be used to benefit the needs of the football program. He believes there will be a market for them.

“They’re a unique uniform in the sense that this will probably be a one-off design. I think when the black uniforms are at a retirement age you may see them for sale as well as they’re certainly unique,” said Jones. “These are definitely a collectible for anyone that follows, or who has been involved with, the program.”

There is a catch to purchasing the item. Starting today, and running through next Sunday, July 20, the uniforms will be available to former players who played during the 2015-2020 time period. They will be first come, first serve for former players who may want their old uniform and have to get it before another possibly interested former player gets into the mix.

Starting Monday, July 21, Jones said it opens up to anyone in the community – Bridgeport or beyond – who wants to purchase one. The cost of the uniforms will be $50 with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the football program.

“I think the former players who wore them and members of the public who are big fans will see these as not only a collectible, but a collectible that was part of two state championships that were worn in the state title games,” said Jones.

Jones said since he began working with the program in the 1990s, he is not aware of former jerseys going up for public sale. He said adding one of these to a shadow box, or any room with collectibles, will be a nice new piece for any Bridgeport diehard.

Supplies are limited as only 48 jerseys are available. Jones said it is just the jersey and not the jersey and pants combination.

For players looking to place an order starting today, call Jones at 304-625-1420. The public can then order July 21. Jones said he will arrange local pickup and for those who are out of the area and will need them mailed, he will work out those details with those wishing to make a purchase.

And he hopes there is plenty of interest. Not only do you get a piece of Bridgeport football history, but you will also be helping provide funds to add to that history.
