Tending Community: The Makings of a Great Event

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on June 05, 2026 from Tending Community

Written by Katie Willard, Founder & CEO of The Social Bee Marketing Agency

As the owner of The Social Bee, I've spent the last several years traveling to fairs, festivals, and events across the country. While every destination is different, I'm always paying attention to the same thing: what makes people want to come back year after year.

But some of my favorite events aren't hundreds of miles away. They're right here at home in Bridgeport.

Over the years, our team has documented everything from state fairs and music festivals to community celebrations and local events. When you spend that much time covering events, you start to notice what separates a good event from a great one.

It's not the size of the crowd.

It's not the entertainment lineup.

And it's certainly not the budget.

The events that leave the biggest impression are the ones that create a sense of community.

That's exactly what I see every time I visit the Bridgeport Farmers Market.

I've lived in Bridgeport long enough that the market has become part of my routine. Some weekends, I stop by for fresh produce. Other times, I'm looking for a gift, a baked good, or simply an excuse to spend a Sunday morning outdoors. More often than not, you'll find me walking the market with my husband, Anthony, and our son, Sawyer.

Some of my favorite Sunday mornings have started there. A coffee in hand, a few familiar faces, and usually leaving with more than I planned to buy.

This past Sunday, our team had the opportunity to capture photo, video, and drone footage at the market. Looking through the footage afterward, I kept noticing the same thing: nobody seemed to be in a hurry.

People were lingering. Stopping to talk. Running into friends they hadn't seen in a while. Kids were dancing near the music. Vendors knew customers by name.

It felt less like a shopping trip and more like a Sunday tradition.

Maybe that's why I appreciate the market so much. In a week filled with emails, meetings, notifications, and deadlines, it feels good to spend a few hours somewhere that encourages people to slow down and simply be together.

The market has become more than a place to buy local products. It's become a gathering place. A weekly tradition. A reflection of what makes Bridgeport special.

One thing this work has taught me is that authenticity is hard to fake. Communities spend a lot of time trying to create a sense of place, but the truth is, you can't manufacture it.

You either have it, or you don't.

Bridgeport has it.

You see it in the small businesses that show up week after week. You see it in the volunteers, organizers, musicians, and vendors who invest their time and energy into creating something meaningful. And you see it in the families who make the market part of their routine.
I've been fortunate to visit some incredible events across the country, but one thing I've learned is that you don't have to travel far to find something special.

Sometimes it's happening right in your own backyard.

For me, that's the Bridgeport Farmers Market.
