The Grapevine: A Busy Week with Events, a Former WVU Sports Leader, the Lang Family and Much More

By Rosalyn Queen on September 01, 2020 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

This oast week certainly was a great one for me. First I just want  to give you a brief overview of the program we had at the PWA to observe the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote.

Beth Bloch was the keynote speaker, and I think that she told us a story that most of us had never heard.  Her husband's great grandfather was a state senator and he cast the winning vote for the passage of the amendment.  Because of the pandemic we could only have 25 people, but it was a great group of 25 past elected women officials and those who have been involved in the voting process.  Anyone looking for a good program I would recommend Beth Bloch and her husband Tom.

The next thing I want to remind you that is I will be hosting the cancer survivors dinner on Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Uptown Event Center.  I urge all of you who had replied to attend this event.  We survivors have a lot to exchange with each other.  I promise you this will be a great event and I hope to see you there. Cancer survivors are a different kind of person.  It certainly changes your whole perspective of life.

I am finally trying to adjust to this home confinement because of the pandemic. I am enjoying sitting n my patio and watching my squirrels and the birds.  Every day or so I make it a habit to go through my files.  But you know how that is.  It takes hours as you read and relive all those former events.

The Bridgeport Library has been so great to keep me supplied with books and the last two were great - Mistress of the Ritz and The Nightingale.  Both of these were stories about the war in Europe.  They were a little sad, but so is life at times.

Next I spent the last two weeks watching the two conventions . Probably some of you would not have enjoyed them. But you know politics is in my blood. I so worry about the demonstrations and the deaths and hope that soon they will be over.  I was so disappointed in the damage in Chicago.  I have walked down that street several times and I hurt when I saw all the damage that was done.

You may see me at a restaurant because I continue to enjoy eating out.  This past week I went to the Wonder Bar with Bobbie Warner, Mona and Ed Pastilong and Ladonna and Dave Manley.  What a wonderful evening.  Great conversation and a wonderful steak.  I could get a little depressed thinking that this will not be over soon, but this is why we must keep busy and find alternate ways to fill our days.

A very Happy Birthday to my sister, Cathy Fisher and my nephews Vince Smith and Nick Smith.  August was my dad's birthday month.  As he got older he so enjoyed his birthday because it meant that most of the family would visit, and he loved being surrounded by all of us.  Dad was born in 1905.  When I worry about getting older, I think about dad and my grandmother who lived to be 99 and was never confined to a bed. Perhaps I have their genes. I hope you all have to get use to having me around.

Fall is upon us.  Plan a walk in the woods and enjoy the beautiful artwork of the Lord as the leaves turn. Maybe you will come across a mushroom. I am patiently waiting.

Congratulations to Andy and Lisa Lang as they head up the United Way fundraiser for this year.  I am sure it will be successful.

The PWA will continue with their Women of Distinction programs with October 9 and November 5 will be the dates to continue these celebrations.  For more information call 304 624 6881.

Stay healthy, be safe and most of all be happy and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
