The Grapevine: A Special Thanks to City of Bridgeport Employee and Why Sometimes It is Okay to Quit

By Rosalyn Queen on October 01, 2020 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

If you are sitting at home trying to observe the Quarantine guidelines, then you may have a lot of time on your hands.  If this is so, then we need to work on creating a new way of life.

There is probably much that we can do in our homes to fulfill the hours.  But then how many times can you dust and clean the floor, especially if you live alone.  If you are an accomplished cook, there is also so much you can make without a few pounds eventually showing up on your waist.

So now what do we do?

We decide just what it is that we want to do and just what we will enjoy doing to keep us busy and satisfied.  It is also important that when we start out on a new project and find out that we do not enjoy this project we learn to quit and move on.  I read recently that the trick is understanding that saying no to something you are expected to accept is not failure.  It is a whole other level to success.

It really takes courage to quit something.  The older I get the more a I find that quit is powerful.  Deciding what you will not have in your life is as important as deciding what you will have.  Trying out something that you expect to love, realizing you do not, and giving it back takes guts.  It means understanding that success is not about nailing it every time, it is about choosing the roles you will play and how well you want to play them.  This is an exert from a column written by Mary Laura Philpott.  I hope you will take this info to heart and learn to quit.  I am sure it will make it much easier to live with this pandemic.

I just do not know how to thank the Bridgeport librarian who has taken care of my reading needs.  She introduced me to a new author and I just cannot seem to get enough of reading her books. The author is Kristin Hannah.

I am reading her fifth book and have enjoyed every one of them.  The Nightingale was one of the best.  It was about a family in Europe during the war and the atrocities they endured during the Holocaust.  I just finished Fly Away, and it too was about a family and the heartaches they endured during a sickness of their mother.  I highly recommend these books and hope you will call the library.  The number is 304-842-8248.  They are practicing social distancing and they will get your selections ready and place them in a bag in the front foyer for you to pick up.  Thanks to the librarian, she has filled many lonely hours for me.

A great big Hurrah to the Young Professional Women’s Association and their leader Betty Felts.  These girls are so active they make my head hurt.  One of their new projects is a food pantry located outside the Uptown Event Center.  It has food for those individuals who might need a meal and individuals who want can drop off food in the pantry.  They work every day on their Christmas stockings for Veterans. Help support them if you can.  A wonderful group of young girls and a great dedicated leader.

The Celebrate America Women of Distinction will be held on Friday, Oct. 9 at noon at the Uptown Event Center. Board of Education Superintendent, Mrs. Dora Stutler will be the keynote speaker. For reservations, call 304-624-6881.

An outdoor craft bazaar will be held On Oct. 3 at the Uptown Event Center.  If interested in participating call 304-624-6881 to reserve a table. Plan on attending to do your holiday shopping.

Take care.  Stay healthy and until next week, “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
