This past week I had the opportunity to discover a well kept secret in Buckhannon. On a back street in the basement of a building there is housed a theatre, Lascaux Micro Theatre.  As it’s name indicates, it seats only about 40 people.  The owner is Bryon Van Nostrand and it even has popcorn for sale. They feature a different film every month and the admission price is $8.00 for the general public and $7.00 for students. 

 

Now for the reason I was there. My son Michael got tickets for he and I to see a local documentary.  Joining us was my sister Cathy and her husband, Dan Fisher.  The movie that was showing was titled "Born in A Ballroom".  This was a documentary film that celebrated the life of Eleanor Malloux.  The name of the movie reflects on the fact that Eleanor was born in a ballroom because the home her parents lived in caught on fire and they moved her mother to the ballroom of the local hotel.  Eleanor said that due to her birth place “she has been dancing every since.”

 

This story takes place in the community of Helvetia in Randolph County. Malloux was the co founder of The Hutte House, a Swiss restaurant in Helvetia, which is still in operation.  The story centers around the life of Eleanor and the activities surrounded around the restaurant and the members of the community.

 

Present was the writer of the story and director of the film, Clara Lehman, who is also the granddaughter of Ms. Malloux.  She was accompanied by her husband and twin daughters.

 

Almost every community in our state that could tell a story like this.  I give this film a high rating and I encourage all of you to think about the story your community has to tell.

 

We decided to have lunch at C. J. Maggie’s before we walked to the theater on Main Street in Buckhannon. Although it had been a while since I had been there, the food at C.J.'s was still delicious.  There is a restaurant next to the theatre, but we did not learn about it until after we had eaten.  We stopped and had coffee there and if I return to the theatre I will plan on eating there.  A long time ago I did visit the Hautte in Helvetia and I hope I will be able to return there for another visit this summer. 

 

Just a short update about my Keto diet.  It has now been over four months, 24 pounds gone, but not a noticeable change in the neuropathy.  I will stay on the diet, it really has not been hard for me -- no potatoes, bread, pasta or deserts and I have truly been honest.  My next step for the neuropathy is therapy.  I hope it will help as I have really developed a fear of falling.  

 

Lent will soon be starting, it seems early to me but this means we will be making Easter bread.  You should try to round up your anise seed now.  I do not know where you can find any but start the search now and you may just get lucky.  What is Easter without “muchalatta.”

 

A Happy Birthday to Bridgeport Mayor Andy Lang and all you other February babies.

 

My brother in law, Virgil Smith, is recuperating from his recent successful surgery.  He will soon be as good as new.  Prayers continue for my ”other son Joe Defazio” and his family.

 

I hope each of you are not caught up in the virus and are healthy and enjoying this strange winter/spring season.
