The Grapevine: One Family's Donation Helping make Thanksgiving Better for Some Community Members

The Progressive Women's Association has maintained a Food Pantry as part of their mission.  They serve the people of Harrison County at their location in the Uptown Event Center located on Washington Avenue.

The Pantry is sustained through the generosity of local businesses, local organizations, and individuals.  Volunteer members of the PWA and PWA staff and maintain the pantry.  The Pantry is open to the public on Thursday and Friday of every week.

Through grants and fundraising efforts of the membership of the PWA, there are monthly purchases of meats and perishable foods through the USDA.

Recently the Farmers Market held their last market for the season at the PWA. The Green Acres Farm located at Rock Cave has participated in the event throughout the summer. The owners are Pati and Lupe Espinosa. They are assisted at the farm and at the market by their children.

At the last market the Espinosa’s brought the remainder of their produce.  After brisk sales on Saturday, they decided to donate the remainder of their goods to the PWA pantry to be distributed to the individuals having claims for Thanksgiving food baskets.  Among those items to be distributed were red and green delicious apples, bell peppers, hot mixed peppers, green tomatoes, potatoes, onions, and a variety of squash.

Each basket will contain those items until they have all been distributed.  The generosity of the Espinosa’s will certainly afford families to enjoy fresh produce from local gardens.

The members of the PWA thank the Green Acres Farm for their recent contribution.

As the PWA gets ready to welcome their new officers, there was a need for some new keys to be made.  After a little research we found that we could get duplicates made in Morgantown.  Judy Ritz drove me there and after much searching on the Mileground we found GForce Lock and Safe, where we were able to get our keys made.  You know there are not many Locksmiths anymore, so when you find a good one you keep him.

The PWA will be ending its year with a lot of activity. We will be participating in the Clarksburg Parade, we will gather as a group to make and sell Pita Piatas and we will end the year with a holiday dinner with the installation of officers and the observance of our 100th anniversary.  Our sponsors for this event are Davis Funeral Home, Laura Goff Davis, and the family of Dianne Urchak.
