The Grapevine: The Scourge of Addiction, Hello May, a Fabulous Area Eatery and the Death of Two Friends

By Rosalyn Queen on May 06, 2021 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

While on the subject of addiction (from last week’s blog), I thought I would go one step further and discuss the drug of choice in our area.  It seems that “FENTANYL” has hit our market and is being taken by those addicts looking for a bigger and better high. It is a powerful synthetic opioid similar to morphine. It is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine.

Legally it is usually prescribed for pain by your doctor.  But the painful part is that it is made illegally.  It is said that it is one of the most common drugs involved in overdose deaths.  It is used in a powder form, a nasal spray or made into pills.  It works on the body by binding to the opioid receptors.  Its effects include extreme happiness, drowsiness, respiratory depression, unconsciousness, coma, and death.

It is reported that there are dealers right here in our area.  A full-blown addict will spend as much as $1,000 a week for their habit.  Recently on the news it was reported that many of the immigrants entering the USA from the southern border are drug dealers and they are the carriers of fentanyl.

To detox from fentanyl is one of the hardest tasks an addict will ever face.  It is very painful with nausea, painful joints, and sick feeling as though you have the flu.  After taking the prescribed medication for detox, sleep is the best way to get through it.  It will take several weeks to get the body back to some type of normal state.  Support from family and prayers are prescribed along with the detox medication.  Help someone you know get through this.  It is not easy. It may be the hardest but will be the best thing you can do.

Well May is here. Did you plan a “Cinque de Mayo” Party?  The weather is certainly giving us a taste of what is to come with the high temperatures for summer.

My brother, Bill came in and it certainly was great to have dinner again at Julios Cafe.  As usual the food was delicious.  I want share with you a nice summer recipe to use as a desert after a nice meal.  Get a watermelon and dice it into small cubes. Place it on a large bowl and marinate it with Amaretto.  Keep it chilled for about one hour and serve it.  Amaretto is basically an Italian liquor and just gives the watermelon a unique taste.  This will be one your favorite summer go to deserts. Goodbye to ice cream.

Condolences to my dear friend Shirleen Isabella on the passing of Sam.  What a wonderful life they made. I was also saddened to learn of the death of Emory Lehosit.  He was an East View boy and we attended school together from the first through the 12th grade.  Many great memories.

Attend to your outside projects, get them done now so you can sit back and enjoy a leisure summer.  Take care, stay healthy and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
