I am probably speaking for a large percentage of my readers who are older and who have been confined to our homes due to COVID-19.

 

If we make a list of things we do to keep us busy, probably on top of the list would be watching television.  Then this leads me to the subject of this blog this week.

 

The war in Ukraine.  I have watched many hours over the past week and each time I come away from the television devastated.  For most of you in my age range, there have been other wars, but I cannot remember any that we sat and waited and watched each step as it happened.  Lately I have giving much thought to our American boys going to war and coming home without limbs or coming home dead, but as I watch this Ukraine thing develop, I think these men and women are no different than our Americans.

 

I have been devastated by the destruction of the buildings and more so than anything by the individuals who are seeking safety.  Can you imagine living in the subways?  Can you imagine having small children in these subways?  Can you imagine carrying your life in two suitcases? 

 

How sad is it to see the thousands of people trying to board the trains that can only handle hundreds?  I cringe when I see some of the beautiful buildings destroyed that are so much a part of Ukraine’s culture.  The destruction of this country is heart breaking to me.

 

I do not know how this will end but my heart and prayers go out to these people, and I pray that I will never have to see this again.

 

Ash Wednesday is here, and this marks the beginning of Lent and then the celebration of Easter Sunday.  Forty days of Lent is a short time to make a few adjustments in our life.  No matter what you aim to sacrifice during this season, remember to give thought and prayer to your efforts.  I always feel that Lent is a time to work on yourself.  Just a little effort can make you a better person that will continue after Lent.  During this time of year, we realize that we have much to give to those who have so little.

 

My thoughts and prayers to my cousin Thelma Ferrise on her passing.  You will never know how much I miss her weekly calls and all the advice she offered me.  Rest In Peace.

 

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to all my Irish friends.  Good luck to the wearing of the green.
