The Grapevine: Ways to Enjoy Thanksgiving, Holiday Gift Ideas, and Sympathy to DeFazio, Betler Families

By Rosalyn Queen on November 26, 2020 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Last week I read an article about gift giving at Christmas and was a little on the negative side encouraging you not to practice this tradition anymore.  The reason being “that we do not need anything.”

Well, speaking for myself and for a lot of other seniors, I beg to differ.  Who said that I do not need a little expressive love and that I do not need a little contact with those I love?

When looking in Webster, I do not find the definition of gift giving as who can give the biggest and most expensive gift.  I just want to offer a little advice from my outlook on gift giving. I will share a secret with you I would be very sad if this Christmas I did not receive any gifts.

First a few suggestions:  a gift card for a restaurant, a gift card for the movies, a gift card for a manicure or pedicure or how about a magazine subscription.  Another great idea is a gift card to a local grocery store.  Just a few of my suggestions and I am sure you can come up with a few of your own.

Now you are going to say, “I just hate to hand out a card.”  Well, let’s take care of that.  Make a trip to the local Dollar Store.  Get a funny or serious card for fifty cents and take the time to write a note in it.  Get a package of those cellophane bags, slip the gift card in the card, place it in the bag, and then get really creative.

How about a few files in the manicure bag or a little note pad and pencil to make a grocery list? Everyone likes to take a box of candy to the movies and who does not want a stick of gum or a mint after eating out at the restaurant.

Now I want to hear an argument from you if you do not think this will make someone very happy and really feel loved.  Just think about me reading a magazine article every month from Good Housekeeping and thinking about you and your thoughtfulness.  I will probably keep your cards forever and get them out throughout the year and read your comments with a tear in my eye.  Now you know the rest of my story.

I am sure you will find someone that will disagree with me, but so be it.  I want to continue the tradition and not be a bah humbug.

I hope you all have a nice Thanksgiving and are able to share it with your family while still observing the quarantine.  This can be very depressive but work on being active and keeping yourself upbeat.

Surround yourself with happy music and good books and view happy movies on television.  Too much of the news can really be depressing.  This may change the way we live forever but try to adjust.  Pick up a new hobby, work a puzzle, get a game of scrabble try painting or crocheting.  Since we cannot have company the dining room table is a good place to use for the projects.

My sincere sympathy to Kay DeFazio on the passing of her mother.  We sat together several times in the waiting room at the hospital and I enjoyed sharing stories with her.

Stay safe and stay healthy and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
