Bridgeport More than Impressive in National Web Site Ranking of Highest Earning Cities in West Virginia

Bridgeport has once again found itself at the top of a national Web site’s listing for West Virginia that is positive for residents and businesses.

This time, the rating comes from Stacker.com. Stacker is a “daae journalism” site that was formed in 2017 that combines data analysis with editorial context and relies on authoritative sources and subject matter experts to create stories.

Recently, the Web site released a list of the highest earning cities in West Virginia. Bridgeport fared more than just well on the list. The city fared best of all.

According to numbers compiled by the Web site, Bridgeport is the Mountain State’s highest earning city. It also is the only city in West Virginia whose median household income is higher than the national average.

Bridgeport’s median household income is listed at $84,382, which is 34.3 percent above the national median. It was also nearly $30,000 higher than the state’s second highest earning city.

The Web site lists Bridgeport as having 41.1 percent of its households earning more than $100,000. The numbers also showed only 3.8 percent of the city’s households earn less than $15,000.

Vienna ($55,562) was ranked second. The rest of the top five, in order, include South Charleston ($53,713), St. Albans ($50,755), and Weirton ($49,496).

Only two other cities from North Central West Virginia made the top 10. They were Clarksburg at number eight ($43,518) and Fairmont at number 10 ($43,319).

The Web site only lists the top 18 in the state. According to Stacker, the numbers were arrived at by utilizing data from the United States Census Bureau. From there, the cities were ranked by the 2019 “5-year estimate median household income” numbers. Every city listed had at least 3,000 households, which excludes a large number of the Mountain State’s small cities.
