Lifelong Resident, BHS Alum, Rick Johnson, Bringing A Slice of New York Pizza Squared WV to Bridgeport

By Jeff Toquinto on September 03, 2026

Bridgeport’s Rick Johnson has been around long enough in multiple capacities to know that being a good father, good husband, good son, a good friend – and, at several stops – a good coach is the right thing to do. He also knows it opens opportunities for those he’s around, and at times, himself.

Starting next week, a door that was opened by being a good coach and friend (along with being rather good with his culinary skills) will open one that will lead to a new business that has been talked about often by frequenters on social media. Johnson is the proud owner of A Slice of New York Pizza Squared WV.

The business is a mobile food trailer. And he is bringing a proven pizza product into the Mountain State from neighboring Pennsylvania.

That concept got started in Murrysville, Pa., by Johnson’s good friend Sean Jefairjian. Jefairjian just happened to have his pizza reviewed by Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports. The review was 8.2 out of 10, and for those who are among Portnoy’s nearly 15 million social media followers they know it is a monster score.

“That was when he began to expand the business. After he got the Portnoy review his business in Murrysville (A Slice of New York) was overflowing so he opened the second one (A Slice of New York Squared) in the southside of Pittsburgh,” said Johnson. “Knowing the product, and knowing Sean, when the opportunity came up it was a no brainer.”

Getting to be the third part of a pizza triple crown business happened because of Johnson’s love of coaching and caring for those he has coached.

“I coached Sean’s daughter (Skyler) for two years (in golf) at Fairmont State, and then she became my assistant,” said Johnson. “That’s how I got to meet her parents and got to become friends with Sean.

“We talked a lot about his passion for pizza and my passion for pizza and that led to the discussion about opening a location here in West Virgina,” Johnson continued. “We got everything worked out, and now we’re here.”

While you know it is pizza, you need to know what type of pizza. The pizza is the square, Sicilian style pie. It is also sourdough.

Johnson said he was not a sourdough first pizza guy. That was until he tried his friend’s pizza.

“The product just wasn’t distinct, it was unbelievable. It’s the right texture with a crunch on the bottom and top and the air in the middle. It’s addictive,” said Johnson. “The dough is so good he now actually supplies it to vendors.”

Johnson said the primary product – the pizza – is good beyond the dough. And there is a reason for it.

“Every product on the pizza, and everyone product beyond the pizza, is top of the line,” said Johnson. “His sauce is tops, and there are no additives in his toppings. He’s always used the freshest ingredients he can get, and we’ll be getting the same.

Listed on the menu, which can be found in detail HERE, are Margherita, Sweet & Spicy, Vodka, and White pizzas. There are also Marra’s Meatballs, which is one thing Johnson will be making from his own family’s recipe, and black and white cookies. Beverages will also be available. Spaghetti along with those meatballs will be available and in the fall and winter months Johnson said Italian Wedding Soup and Pasta Fagioli. The menu will occasionally have specials, such as mini-hoagies, Johnson said.

The first official day of business is Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Meadowcreek, which is the relatively new development across from Bridgeport Country Club. On Wednesday, Sept. 9, the truck will be at the North Central West Virginia Airport by the hangars to serve businesses there.

The day many will get a good chance to try it will be Friday, Sept. 11. The truck will be set up in the parking lot of Bridgeport Express Care on Johnson Avenue in the evening and will have their product available for those heading to the Bridgeport game before and after the contest, as well as anyone else driving through during that time.

Visit their Facebook page HERE to see locations and updates. Also, if interested in having A Slice of New York Pizza Squared WV at your business location, event, or other gathering, contact Johnson at 304-669-0685.
