Things continue to grow at thee The Bridge Sports and Recreation Complex. And the latest addition, which is already in place, should be ready for public use this spring.

Bridgeport City Manager Brian Newton recently announced that the new restroom and storage building planned for use at the new turf field behind the Citynet Center at The Bridge is in place. Late last year, contractors placed the building near the turf facility.

“It came in to the city in two pieces and it has been installed,” said Newton. “We’re all very happy to see it. I just wish it would have been here earlier so we could have utilized it this past fall, but that is how things are going now.”

Newton said that The Bridge General Manager Droo Callahan said the building did come too late in the season to use due to water being turned off for the fall. Newton said the goal is to have it operational when warmer weather invades the area.

The building is precast concrete, which Callahan said was the choice due to durability and requiring little maintenance. Newton said Callahan explained cheaper options were available, but any savings gathered on the front end would have dissipated due to higher maintenance costs in the years ahead.

The building was purchased from CXT Precast Concrete at a cost of $186,655, which is covered by the 1 percent sales tax that goes to the operation and maintenance of The Bridge. Individuals may have noticed large cranes lowering the buildings in place in recent weeks.

The facility provides a restroom facility to those utilizing the outdoor turf facility. Those utilizing the facility now have to access the interior restrooms.

“Kids always have to go to the bathroom. Myself, as a grandparent, you know you better have a bathroom close by (for the kids),” Newton said, with a laugh. “It’s for anyone up there, and it is something that has been asked for.”

The storage units are located on the backside of the restroom facility.
