Swing Into Fall with West Virginia’s Three New Almost Heaven Swings, including Two Relatively Close to City

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on October 08, 2025

The West Virginia Department of Tourism’s signature Almost Heaven swings can now be found in Calhoun, Ritchie and Wetzel counties, bringing the total number of these scenic photo-ops to nearly 50. Installed in perfect timing to offer stunning fall photos, these new swings will be surrounded by peak foliage in the coming weeks.

“As you plan your autumn getaway to the Mountain State, make sure to visit as many of our Almost Heaven swings as you can,” said West Virginia Department of Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby. “Each location boasts unique scenery, with breathtaking overlooks and vibrant fall foliage all around.”

New Swing Locations

  • North Bend State Park — If driving, visitors can access this swing via the Main Park Road. If hiking, both the Southern Railroad Trail and Castle Rock Trail will lead to the swing sitting at the north bend of the Hughes River — how the park got its name. Complete with two ramps, this swing is ADA accessible from both sides.

  • The 1982 Foundation — Located in Grantsville, this Almost Heaven swing is situated at what was once the Calhoun County High School and is now a National Historic Landmark. A short walk from the gravel parking lot beside the pool will bring you to a paved, flat trail that’s ADA accessible and leads to the beautifully placed swing along the Little Kanawha River.

  • Wetzel County — Perched at the highest point of the Wetzel County 4-H Campground trail systems, this Almost Heaven swing can be found at the top of "Monarch Trail.” Begin at the trailhead and follow the signs to reach the top of the trail — a view that gives way to 360-degree views of the rolling mountains. This two-mile loop is perfect for walkers, runners and bikers alike.

The department’s live leaf tracker has officially launched and will be updated in real time, offering a glimpse of current conditions. For a chance to be featured on the live leaf map and West Virginia Tourism’s social media channels, share your photos using #AlmostHeaven. Editor's Note: Top photo is of the new swing at North Bend State Park in Ritchie County, while the bottom swing is in Wetzel County. The Ritche County swing is about an hour drive from Bridgeport, while the Wetzel County swing is a little more than an hour, according to Google.
