Former President of Maple Lakes Board of Directors, Michael M. Zimniski, Passes Away at Age of 73

Michael M. Zimniski, Jr. (aka Zim), 73, of Bridgeport, passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2017. He was born in 1943 in Kanawha City, Charleston. The son of Michael M. Zimniski and Anna S. Zimniski, he is survived by his loving and intelligent wife of 51 years Suezann, and his sisters Chris of New York and Toni of Ohio.
He grew up in Kanawha City and attended St. Agnes grade school and Charleston Catholic High School. He was an altar boy, a Cub scout, Boy Scout and Explorer Scout and was awarded the Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow and Catholic Scouting Medals.
He graduated from Marshall University with an engineering degree and spent a year post graduate at WVU. He was a Professional Engineer registered by examination in the fields of Civil, Mechanical, and Sanitary Engineering. He was also a Registered Surveyor and a National Registered (by exam) Environmental Engineer. He began his career with UCC, CPD and was the Assistant Chief Engineer. He was also employed by Mason Glass as an Assistant Plant Manager, and later with Alcan Rolled Products Division as Manager of Engineering and Maintenance, Production Manager and Operations Manager. He spent his last ten years before retirement from Alcan as Manager of Environment, Safety, and Special Projects. This broad assignment took him to 25 countries, and across the United States doing follow up and investigation on serious safety issues as well as remediation and investigation of major environmental problems and audits. He wife was able to join him on many of these trips and very much enjoyed visiting the different countries.
He was a pilot with ratings of Private, Commercial, Instruments, Seaplane as well as time in helicopters and military jet trainers. He had many sports cars over the years and enjoyed autocross racing. He and his wife enjoyed house boating on Tygart Lake for over twenty years along with his friends DW and Dan. He also enjoyed skeet and target shooting with his friend Bud. He was a SCUBA diver with advanced ratings and very much liked diving. He once descended to the depth of 800’ in a two-man research submarine. He tried parachuting and with his friends Andy and Randy completed the Pittsburgh Marathon in 1987. He was also an AF & AM member. His many hobbies included stained glass (once participated at a Jackson’s Mill craft show), jewelry, wood working, beekeeping, and auto mechanics.
He and his wife lived at Maple Lake for over 45 years where he served on the Board of Directors and as President worked on many sewage and water quality committees.
Thanks to Connie, the puppies Brownie, Chloe, Lucy, and even Korki were their children.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Zim’s memory are to be made to Humane Society of Harrison County, PO Box 4397, Clarksburg, WV 26302.
Cremation was his wish and a visitation and remembrance will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, 2017, at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport.
