When BHS Junior Brook Russell decided to pursue a future career in political science and public relations, little did she know the decision would lead to her being among three Bridgeport High School students being named Honorary Secretary of State at the West Virginia State Capitol.

She, along with senior Doug Soule, attended a leadership academy in Charleston last summer and created an Inspire WV team, which also include Joplin Kehrer and Ashton Miller.  The team spent countless hours encouraging teens to register to vote and stressing the importance of being informed.

“A lot of teens don’t think that they can make a difference when it comes to changing policies in our state and beyond,” said Russell.  “We want to empower them and give them concrete ideas of how the process works, so when they are faced with issues they disagree with, they will know how to react.”

Together, the team has now helped almost all of the senior class at BHS to register to vote.  They have also formed a network with other students around the county and state whose mission it is to increase voter turnout and voter education.  Currently, the four BHS students are organizing a political panel for students at BHS.

“We want policymakers from around the state to speak directly to the BHS student body,” she said.  “We have worked with students and helped them voice their concerns and hope that state and local politicians can answer some of those concerns and steer them toward legitimate resources.”

Soule has already served as Honorary Secretary of State and on March 23, Joplin Kehrer and Brook Russell had their turn being recognized at the capitol.

“We had the opportunity to speak with several delegates in Charleston and many are considering serving on the political panel for BHS,” said Russell. “Being an Honorary Secretary of State will give me a chance to see the inner workings of the political system and give me a glimpse into my potential career in political science.”
