With BHS seniors and their parents counting the days till graduation, college options are at the forefront of their minds. This week, families and potential college freshmen can find out all the details of over 55 colleges and universities at the Harrison County College and Career Night, held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 26 at Lincoln High School.

In addition to representatives from the post-secondary educational options, the recruiters for all of the military branches will also be present at the event.  United Technical Center will be on hand to answer questions about their post-graduate programs and several companies will be at the event for those inquiring about internships, training and employment opportunities.  These include the West Virginia Carpenters Training Center, The Thrasher Group, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, III’s office, OIC Training Academy, JW Ebert Corporation, WYK Associates, and the Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center.

A Promise Scholarship representative will aid parents and students in the process of application and clarify requirements of the scholarship.  Financial Aid and FAFSA help will be available throughout the College and Career Night.

“Each year, the event rotates among the Harrison County high schools,” said BHS Counselor Jane Byrd.  “It’s an opportunity to get an early start on the process and help the transition go more smoothly.”

For more than a decade, the Harrison County College and Career Night has been informing students and parents about options after high school.  The event is free and open to the public and will include prizes and cash drawings throughout the night.

Counselor Byrd will continue the college preparation process November 3-9 as she works with every BHS senior to make sure they are on target with all they need to do.  The week includes assistance with college applications, essay writing for scholarships, admission standards, guest speakers, and resources for internships and scholarships.

“This process takes some of the anxiety away for seniors and it helps them identify areas they need to focus on in the following months,” said Byrd.  “Bridgeport High School had 91% of its seniors apply for their FAFSA last year because they were prepared. We post all scholarship and guidance information on www.calendarwiz.com/bhsindians for those who would like additional information.”
