Teacher Walk-Out Leads to Delicious New Business for Bridgeport High School Teacher's Family

March brought with it the West Virginia teacher walk-out, many cold days, and the arrival of some tasty pies that have now grown into a business for one Bridgeport High School teacher’s family.  Albany St. Martin Brown, wife of BHS English and Theatre teacher Jared St. Martin Brown, is now following her baking passion and launching a business of her own called SMB Table.

“The business started as a small dream in the back of my mind,” said Albany.  “Over the years, I have loved baking pies for my husband, son and dad on their birthdays.  When I delivered some of the homemade pies during the teacher walk-out, people loved them and now my dream of a market pie shop has become a reality.”

SMB Table is a minimal plastic shop, reinforcing the owner’s philosophy of being mindful of the earth for generations to come.  Each week, the company will feature an Item of the Week that supports this cause, including this week’s feature of a zero-waste, plastic-free, refillable homemade laundry soap.

“We have been using this soap recipe for six years and we can’t wait to share it and other featured items with the friends at the market,” she said.

SMB Table currently sells whole apple and pecan pies, chocolate chip cookies and delicious Pie Babies for smaller appetites.  They will be at the Clarksburg Farmer’s Market on the first and third Saturdays each month from June through October, located in front of Tractor Supply.

“We also deliver and will bring any of our desserts to meetings and events in the area,” said St. Martin Brown.

Pies and treats can be ordered on www.squareup.com/store/smb-table or by visiting www.facebook.com/piesfromscratch.
