About 90 individuals attended the 2018 West Virginia SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) Conference at Bridgeport Conference Center Monday and Tuesday.

Featured presentations included those concerning employer liability (presenters Allison Williams, Phil Binotto), effective performance reviews (presenters Michelle Dougherty, Michael Moore), developments in sexual harassment (presenters Susan Deniker, Jana Grimm) and feedback culture (presenters Bobbie Conklin, Jennifer Trippett). Jack Merinar and Tracey Eberling presented "How to Avoid Trouble Under the Fair Labor Standards Act." The annual meeting was sponsored by the Greater Bridgeport Convention & Visitors Bureau.

One highlight of the conference was the State Council Student Case Competition. Four university teams competed with West Virginia University taking top honors.

“SHRM’s Statewide Case Competitions offer a unique opportunity for HR students to apply in-class learning to real-world HR scenarios and showcase their knowledge to seasoned HR practitioners,” said Susan Post, SHRM-SCP, east divisional director at SHRM. “These events also enhance students’ perspectives on the value and importance of what it means to be a member of the HR community and career partners with SHRM as they embark on their HR professional pursuits.”

The “realistic job preview” enables team members to leverage their course knowledge and apply it to a real-life HR situation. During the competition, each team analyzed and solved a business case by preparing a 15-minute oral presentation, which requires integrated HR thinking, ethical decision-making, and strong communication and presentation skills. The presentation round was judged onsite by a panel of certified SHRM members.
