For those visiting Bridgeport who have already sampled the city's fare or those who are residents of the city and beyond looking for a trip for a new culinary experience, here's the latest edition of WBOY's Restaurant Road Trip. And this one, which opened just a few months ago, is about one hour west of Bridgeport in Ritchie County.

FROM WBOY

For this week's stop on the Restaurant Road Trip, we will take you to a bakery in Cairo that started out small, but is continuing to grow - Pastry and Patels.

"My mother was a baker. My grandmother baked. They always made the cookies. The homemade cookies and stuff, so I guess we always had homemade cookies, you know, and homemade pies, and homemade bread, and it's just something that I like to do," said Kay Mullenix, owner of Pastry and Petals Restaurant and Bakery.

Mullenix has been selling her baked goods to the community in Historic Cairo for nearly two years. It started out as selling baked goods and gifts out of a shop down the street and now she has branched out.

"It's kind of escalated now. We've moved to a different location. Bigger. Now we've got the restaurant and the bakery, and it's been nice for the community, I think, and I enjoy it," said Mullenix.

Kay's specialty is her sweet treats.

"I've just always like to bake. All of our cookies here are made from scratch. I use the same recipe. Carrot cake is one of our biggest sellers. It's made from scratch. And we try to keep everything in small batches. So sometimes we do run out, but it's always fresh," said Mullenix.

Baked goods aren't the only thing on the menu. Kay serves everything from salads, burgers, and country fried steak, which is one of the biggest sellers. Every Friday and Saturday, hot and fresh pizzas are served.
