Off the Shelf: 6,000 DVDs - Popular TV Series to Kids' Movies and Box Office Smash Hits - Available at Bridgeport Public Library

By Sharon Saye on September 20, 2017 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The library has an extensive collection of DVDs, well over 6,000 of them. There are classic films such as “Ben Hur,” and “Casablanca” as well as popular titles such as “Star Wars” and “Planet of the Apes.”  There are children’s movies such as “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Bridge at Terabithia.”

For those into binge watching you can stock up on all the past seasons of “Game of Thrones” or revisit “The Sopranos.”  You can bury yourself in multiple seasons of “Seinfeld” or “Veep” or start to catch up with “Outlander” and “Orphan Black.”

DVDs check out like books for two weeks.  They cannot be renewed.  There is no longer a charge to checkout DVDs, but there is still a limitation of ten per cardholder at one time.  Also you cannot place holds on DVDs since the newer ones have limited availability.

The library buys new titles at a regular pace and tries to take advantage of sales to pick up older titles particularly television series.  Just in the last few weeks we have added “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” starring Chris Pratt,  “King Arthur” starring Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law,  “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” starring Oprah Winfrey,  as well as “Baywatch,” “The Comedian,” “The Dinner,” “Karen Kingsbury’s a Time to Dance, “ “My Mother and Other Strangers,” “Megan Leavey,” “My Cousin Rachel,”  “Paris Can Wait,” “Big Sick,” “Hero,” “Captain Underpants,” “The Mummy,” and “Hope Dances.”

The big winner at the 2017 Emmy Awards was “Big Little Lies,” the multiple part HBO series starring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, and it is now available to check out.  Award-winning documentarian Ken Burns returns with a multi-part look at “Vietnam” currently showing nightly on PBS; the DVD version is also available.

Other television series that can be checked out are: “Orphan Black – Season 5,” “Star Wars Rebels – Complete Season 3,” “This is Us – Season One,” “Veep – The Complete Sixth Season,” “Magicians – Season 2,” “Big Bang Theory -  The Complete 10th Season,” “Riverdale –The Complete First Season,” “Supernatural Complete 12th Season,” “Broadchurch – The Complete Third Season,” “Blacklist – The Complete Fourth Season,” “The 100 – The Complete Fourth Season,” “Bones Season 12,” and “Girls Season 6.”

DVDs are particularly popular as the weather changes; cold, rainy or snowy weekends are the perfect time to binge watch.  So please take advantage of the library’s collection.
