Nora Roberts writing under the name of J. D. Robb returns with her 47th entry in her “In Death” series.   In “Leverage in Death,” two major companies have a meeting to complete a merger, but one of the lead executives walks into the room strapped with explosives and the results are 11 dead and scores of injured.  Eve Dallas and her assistant Peabody arrive to investigate and discover that the executive’s family was held hostage and threatened with death if he did not go through with the explosion.

Dallas needs to find out who would profit from this act of terrorism and her clues lead her to a wealthy con man who turns up dead the very next day.  Who knew about this merger and exactly how were they going to use it to get rich?  Soon, what looks like one opportunistic act of terror turns into much more and Dallas and her team are looking in some unexpected places.

If you have never read any of the “In Death” novels, you should start way back at the beginning with “Naked In Death.”  One of the delights of the series is how the characters grow and change.  You don’t have to read every one in order, but you will appreciate them more.

This fall is going to be a rich one for mystery/thriller readers.  J.K. Rowling writing as Robert Galbraith returns with the next Cormoran Strike book, “Lethal White.”  Craig Johnson returns with another Longmire mystery in “Depth of Winter” and Kate Atkinson adds “Transcription” to the list of her novels.  Vince Flynn and Kyle Mills return with a Mitch Rapp novel in “Red War.”

In October and November, readers will have a new Louise Penny with “Kingdom of the Blind,” David Baldacci with “Long Road to Mercy,” Michael Connelly with “Dark Sacred Night,” Lee Child with “Past Tense: A Jack Reacher Novel,” John Sandford with “Holy Ghost: A Virgil Flowers Novel” and John Grisham’s “The Reckoning.”
