Off the Shelf: Grammy Winning Sounds at the Library

By Sharon Saye on February 15, 2017 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The Grammy Awards were presented on Sunday, February 12 in a three hour long program televised on CBS.  If you go to the Grammy website, you will discover that there are nearly 100 categories from Record of the Year to Best Music Film.  Obviously not all of those were presented on February 12th or the program would still be running.  Music lovers can check out some of these nominees from the library’s CD collection or download them from Freegal.

The library does not have all of the nominated items, but it does have a representative sampling.  From Adele for her album, “25” which won five Grammys to Willie Nelson who won in the Traditional Vocal Album category for “Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin,” the Grammy Awards are incredibly diverse.

David Bowie posthumously won five awards including Best Rock Album for his last recording, “Blackstar” while Beyoncé won two awards including Best Urban Contemporary Album for “Lemonade.”

Adele won for Album of the Year with “25” against Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Drake and Sturgill Simpson as well as Song of the Year for “Hello” against songs performed by Beyoncé, Mike Posner, Justin Bieber and Lukas Graham.

Other artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Alabama Shakes, Ariana Grande, Rhianna, Sia, Herb Alpert, Demi Lovato, Barbra Streisand, Bob Dylan, Panic at the Disco, Bon Iver, Fantasia, Kanye West, Maren Morris, Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, Loretta Lynn, Enya, Lauren Daigle, Joey & Rory, Hillary Scott & the Scott Family, Joe Bonamassa, Lori Mckenna, Sarah Jarosz, Judy Collins, Ziggy Marley, Yo-Yo Ma, Coldplay and Drake were all among the hundreds nominated.

Freegal, the library’s download service, is available 24/7 to anyone with a Bridgeport library card.  It has over 7 million songs as well as a collection of videos.  Cardholders can download three songs per week starting every Monday.  Many of the artists can be found on Freegal.  It is a good place to sample some of the artists with which you might not be familiar.  Once you download your three songs, they are yours until you delete them from your computer or device.
