Off the Shelf: Kicking Off the Library's Summer Reading Program with a Bang

By Sharon Saye on May 24, 2017 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Registration for all of our Summer Reading Programs begins on June 1, but the real kick-off event called “Preamble” occurs on Thursday, June 8 at 4 p.m. when local drumming talent Anthony Douglas will provide a drum clinic at the library.  Douglas has over twenty-five years of experience and knowledge of the history of the craft.  Drumming eases anxiety and burns calories.

Then at 6 p.m. the festivities continue with the West Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard.  WVSSAR members will provide a musket demonstration, explanation of historical artifacts, presentation of the colors and more.

The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Programs revolves around American history beginning June 8th – 16th with the Colonies and American Revolution.  Each week another American time period is covered emphasizing the diversity of American culture.

All you need to participate in this year’s Summer Reading Programs is a Bridgeport Public Library card, and to obtain one of those, just bring a photo ID.  For children, a parent or guardian must have a library card.  Once registered, participants are eligible to win prizes and attend programs.  They also receive a packet containing reading lists, activity sheets, and calendars of events.

Programs for children are offered on Wednesdays at noon and Thursdays at 6 p.m.  Almost all the programs require advance registration so that we can prepare enough supplies.  Programs for teens are generally offered on Mondays at 6 p.m. and for adults, they are offered on various days of the week.  Additional programs for participants of all ages are scheduled on Fridays at noon.  Please refer to the calendar of events available at the Library and online.

The Library will be closed this weekend for the Memorial Day holiday on Saturday and Monday, and will resume its regular schedule on Tuesday:  weekdays 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from noon until 5 p.m.
