Chalk Couture Kids' Classes Coming to Benedum Civic Center; Adult Class Scheduled Too

By Julie Perine on June 03, 2019 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Since December, Carissa Huff has taught Chalk Couture through Bridgeport Parks and Recreation.

"Classes have been successful," she said. "The product is simple to use and results have turned out very well. It allows people to be creative and create their unique pieces."

A current DIY crase, Chalk Couture is versatile, washable and reusable, Huff said.

“You use a chalk paste, which is a thick consistency, so it adheres to the surface. However, if you mess up, it’s so versatile that you can wash it off and start over," she said. "It can be used on glass, wood, metal, pillows, T-shirts, chalkboards or about any type of surface you can think of. It’s not permanent until you apply a clear sealer, but we do use chalk inks that are permanent products.”

Adult classes have been well received and now children will have opportunity to learn the artform during their summer vacation.

"Kids of all ages can use the product to create a one-of-a-kind project," Huff said. "It's a good summer activity to keep kids creative."

Bridgeport Recreation Coordinator Katie Squires said classes are scheduled for Saturday, June 8 and Saturday, July 13.

We will take sign-ups for Saturday’s class through Thursday (June 6) evening but the July class registration is ongoing. Class is $25 including all materials and will be from 9-11 a.m. at the Civic Center," Squires said.

Sign up at the Benedum Civic Center on West Main Street. Call 304-842-8240 for more information.

Feedback for Chalk Couture has been been positive, Squires said. Another adult class is scheduled for June 12

Huff first discovered Chalk Couture on Pinterest. She did some research, eventually meeting a sponsor in person who educated her about the product and process.

After selecting a surface – chalkboard often a favorite – the crafter prepares the sticky transfer by “fuzzing” it so it will adhere to the surface. Chalk paste is applied over the transfer with a squeegee and the surface is washed with warm water. Once dry, the surface is sticky again, allowing for layering of transfers and plenty of creativity. Chalk paste is available in a variety of colors. They, too, can be layered to create a unique look.

“It’s very quick drying and unlike the old mylar stencils, there is no bleeding, so there are less mess-ups,” Huff said. “But even if there is, you can wash it off and start over.”
She encourages crafters and novices alike to try their hand at Chalk Couture.

“Anyone can use it and it looks clean and professional,” she said. “And what I love most in the versatility. Our tastes change and sometimes we get tired of home décor. It can be a big expense if you overturn everything every year or season, but you can switch it up and redo these pieces so you’re not stuck with one thing.”

Squires said Chalk Couture was a welcome addition to adult programming and said Bridgeport Parks and Recreation is happy to now offer it to kids.

“You see so many of these fun works of art in stores, but it’s even better when it’s something you can make yourself! Chalk Couture will continue our wonderful DIY classes and we are excited to offer to our community," she said.

A crafter, Huff displays and sells her wares at area craft and vendor shows. Learn more about her business at The Eclectic Farm Facebook page.
