Thursday’s weather provided a perfect setting for playing softball – a light blue sky, a few white clouds, and the temperature was 75 degrees. It also provided the perfect setting for the Bridgeport Middle School to have its first home game of the season. The Robert L. Bland Lady Patriots provided the opposition.

Unfortunately, the Braves fell by a 22-3 score.

Prior to the start of the game, players from both teams were introduced over the public address system. Molli Enfield, a seventh grader on the Lady Braves softball team, sang the national anthem.

In the top of the first, the Lady Patriots scored two runs. The first batters were walked and each stole a base. The first run scored on a ground out to second and the second scored on a BMS infield error.

The Lady Braves responded with a run of their own in their half of the first. Maci Cook singled and moved to second on a ground out by Rachel Mason. Gabby Reep then singled to bring home Cook. BMS now trailed 2-1.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second and third innings.

RLB added on a single run in the third. A walk, two singles and a BMS infield error allowed the run to score. The Lady Patriots now lead 3-1.

BMS started the bottom of the fourth with a single by Katie Via, who promptly stole second base. She came around to score on an infield error off the bat of Kylie Burke. The Lady Braves had made the score 3-2.

The Lady Patriots extended their lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning.

BMS added one run in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Cook doubled and came around to score on a single by Reep. BMS now trailed 5-3.

The Lady Patriots put the game away by scoring four runs and 13 runs in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, and were aided by six BMS errors.  BMS was held scoreless in its at bats in the sixth and seventh innings.

With the loss, the Lady Braves record is now 1-3 on the 2018 season.

Makenna Smith was the starting pitcher for the Lady Braves and went 5 2/3 innings. Maddie Stallman finished pitching the final 1 1/3 innings. Smith suffered her first pitching loss of the season and her record is now 1-1.

The Lady Braves return to action on Monday when they visit Mountaineer Middle School and take on the Lady Mountain Lions. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
