STRONG IDEA: Tis the Season ... Simple Steps to a Healthier Holiday

By Emily Stapleton on November 19, 2013 from Strong Ideas via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The Holiday season is here and I, for one, love this time of the year.  I plan to savor every second of the Thanksgiving holiday and then head right into the joys of Christmas.   Tis the season for shopping, eating, gift giving, spending time with family.

Unfortunately, some of the very same things that bring us joy during the season can be detrimental to our overall health.  Holiday shopping can cause stress and financial worry.  Sometimes family relationships can cause conflict during the season.  And of course, overeating and weight gain can happen.

Many aspects of the Holiday season, and life in general, are not within your control…but many aspects are.  Focus on some simple steps you can take, all of which are within your control, to make the holiday season more enjoyable.

1.    Drink plenty of water.  Shoot for 64 ounces per day.  Staying hydrated helps to keep your energy level up so you can enjoy it all.  Drinking water causes you to feel more full and you’re less likely to overeat.

2.    Exercise.  I know; I know there’s no time.  You’ve got to make some time.  Even exercising for as little as 10 minutes helps to relieve stress and burn calories.  Stay tuned to this blog for a simple exercise program you can do on your own or with a group in December.

3.    Breathe.  That’s right; just breathe.  Click here to read more about the benefits of breathing.  When you feel the stress of the holidays coming on strong; stop and take three deep breaths.

Too simple?  Sometimes we complicate life too much…sometimes it really is that simple.

Until Next Week,
Emily Stapleton
