Former Head of Bridgeport-Based District 4 Office of WVDOH, Gregory Willard Phillips, Sr., Passes Away

Gregory Willard Phillips, Sr., age 70, of Buckhannon, WV, died Thursday, July 2, 2020, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
 
He was born January 24, 1950, in Buckhannon, a son of the late Dallas Willard and Mary Lee Kopfle Phillips.
 
On September 6, 1986, he married Cindy Eddy Myers, who survives. Also surviving are two sons. Greg Phillips, Jr. and C.B. Phillips and wife Tina; one daughter, Holly Green and husband Jon; four grandsons, Anthony and Hank Phillips, and Jimmie and Julian Green; and one brother, Steve Phillips.
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Eddy Phillips.
 
Mr. Phillips attended Philip Barbour High School and was an accomplished athlete. He was a four-year letterman in football and wrestling and a three-year letterman in track.
 
Mr. Phillips was an active member of the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, where he served two terms as Chairman of the Trustees and also on the Church Council. He was very instrumental in several church matters.
 
He worked as a coal miner for 20+ years before beginning his career with the Dept. of Highways. Throughout his 20+ year career with the Dept. of Highways, he held several managerial positions, including the Assistant Director for the West Virginia Dept. of Transportation. He retired as the District Manager of District 4 in Harrison County in 2014.
 
He enjoyed camping, golfing and was also very active in politics, where he once ran for the House of Delegates.
 
Above all, he was a loving husband and a devoted grandfather. He always looked forward to spending time with his grandsons. They brought him so much joy in life.
 
In honoring Mr. Phillips’ wishes, he will be cremated.
 
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
 
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
