Zorick Finishes First at County Meet as BHS Boys Capture Team Title; Pappas Leads Girls to Runner-up Finish

Bridgeport High School’s Troy Zorick took first place at the Harrison County cross country championship meet with a time of 18:49.82 to lead the Indians to the boys team title.
 
The BHS girls finished second behind Liberty and were led by a third-place finish from Kaitlin Pappas with a time of 22:13.22. Liberty’s Desitiny Berryman won the girls individual title with a time of 20:40.99.
 
The Top 10 finishers earned all-county honors. Joining Zorick for the BHS boys was William Northey, who came in 10th with a time of 20:38.41. In addition to Pappas, the BHS girls were represented in the Top 10 by Madison Looker, who ran a seventh-place time of 23:44.04.
 
Joining Zorick and Northey in contributing to the boys’ team score of 57 points were Quentin Collier, who came in 14th with a time of 21:11.68, Ethan Smell, who was 18th with a time of 21:41.44 and Colton Reed who was 21st with a time of 22:22.94.
 
Other boys who earned all-county honors were: Notre Dame’s Evan McElwayne (second place time of 19:49.58), Robert C. Byrd’s Caleb Jenkins (third place time of 19:54.05), Liberty’s Austin Shuman (fourth place time of 20:00.04), Lincoln’s Isaac Coffman (fifth place time of 20:05.51), Liberty’s Wyatt Miller (sixth place time of 20:13.21), Lincoln’s Adrian Hott (seventh place time of 20:25.97), South Harrison’s Tanner Finster (eighth place time of 20:28.85) and Harris Holden (ninth place time of 20:32.08).
 
Other girls who earned all-county honors were: Robert C. Byrd’s Claudia Moore (second place time of 21:10.57), Liberty’s Kaitlyn Key (fourth place time of 22:35.73), South Harrison’s Dakota James (fifth place time of 22:59.12), Liberty’s Annika Shuman (sixth place time of 23:27.90), Lincoln’s Hannah Rowan (eighth place time of 23:51.02), South Harrison’s Reyna Headley (ninth place time of 23:51.91) and RCB’s Paris Barker (10th place time of 23:52.51).
 
The county meet came on the heels of a strong performance for the Indians at the Ritchie County Invitational at North Bend State Park.
 
Zorick had the third-best time in the boys field with a time of 17:32. Wheeling Central’s Aidan Scott took first place with a time of 16:47 and Magnolia’s Landen Davis edged Zorick for the runner-up spot with a time of 17:31.
 
As a team, the Bridgeport finished fourth. Parkesburg South took first place.
 
Following Zorick for the Indians were Quentin Collier with a 36th overall time of 20:23, Northey with a 42nd place time of 20:57, Ethan Smell with a 46th place time of 21:07 and Colton Reed with a 51st place time of 21:37.
 
Also competing for the BHS boys but there finishes didn’t count toward the team points were Jackson Holtz who was 61st overall with a time 22:19, Ian Scroggs who was 64th overall with a time of 22:46 and Andrew Matlock who was 66th overall with a time of 22:48.
 
A total of 87 boys from 19 different schools competed in the race.
 
Pappas was ninth overall in the girls race with a time of 21:16. Doddridge County’s Alexis Lamp took first place with a time of 18:57. Doddridge also won the team title, while the Indians finished fifth.
 
Looker had the second-best finish for BHS with a 24th overall time of 23:32. Abigale Stewart ran a time of 23:55 which was good for 29th overall. Rounding out the finishes that went toward to team points were Mikaela DeMoss and Brea Holt who were 32nd and 33rd, respectively. DeMoss ran a 24:12, while Holt came in at 24:27.
 
Also competing for the BHS girls were Sara Rexroad, who was 39th overall with a time of 24:55, Victoria Vash, who was 42nd overall with a time of 25:05, Natalie Wagner, who was 47th overall with a time of 25:50, Renzy Pethel, who was 54th overall with a time of 26:45, Kylie Berry, who was 62nd overall at 28:01, Payton Janssen, who was 64th overall at 28:23 and Anna Grajales, wo was 79th overall with a time of 39:48.4
 
A total of 79 runners from 18 different schools competed in the race.
 
The BHS cross country teams don’t have a meet scheduled for this weekend and are set to return to action at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 13 at the Big 10 Conference Championships at Preston High School.
