BHS Alumna Kristin Staub Named 2016 Fairmont State University Homecoming Queen Saturday

Oct. 1, 2016 is a day Kristin Staub will never forget. Fairmont State University continued its winning streak to claim a 48-14 homecoming victory over Urbana University and in an unconventional halftime ceremony, she was named FSU homecoming queen.

The 2013 Bridgeport High School alumna said she couldn’t have been happier.

“I was so excited. I was crying and emotional – and it was awesome to have my family and friends there supporting me, she said.

Staub was nominated for queen by the FSU cheer squad of which she has been a member all four years of her pursuit of an exercise science degree.

“Each organization selects a candidate and I represented the cheer team,” she said. “Then (FSU) holds voting for three days for students to vote online. The candidates all campaigned for a week and there was a bunch of activities throughout that time.”

Although Staub wasn’t expecting the crown, she said she did think she had a solid chance to be named queen from the 10 candidates vying for the title.

“I’m very involved on campus,” she said. “Through the cheer team, we do a lot on campus and do community service too.”

Her fellow cheerleaders not only cheered for a Fighting Falcon victory on Saturday. They cheered Staub on also. That meant the world to her, she said
.
Staub was escorted Saturday by BHS alum Logan Lehosit, a member of the FSU swim team and a campus fraternity organization. Lehosit was named homecoming king in 2015. Named king this year was Andrew Cook.

Saturday’s crowning was a little out of the ordinary because it took place on the sidelines; not on the field.

“They announced that I was the queen, but they told us they didn’t have the crowns,” Staub said. “They ran out of time, I guess. The football team came running onto the field and we had to wait on the side for the crowning and to get pictures.”

Staub didn’t mind it all so much. It was still a perfect day, she said.

While attending BHS, she was a member of the varsity cheer squad, served as DECA Club president and was involved with student council.

Continuing her education at FSU was a good choice.

“I absolutely love Fairmont State. I love how close all the students are on campus. It’s like one big family. All of us are one unit and hang out together,” she said
.
Staub said she feels like she has built many connections over her four years at FSU and has made lifelong friends.

“For them to nominate me for queen and want me to have this award means a lot to me. I’m very honored to represent Fairmont State,” she said.

After graduating in the spring of 2017, Staub plans to apply for occupational therapy school.
