BHS Seniors, Alumni Part of 105 Burnside Foundation Scholarship Winners; More than $250,000 Awarded

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on July 15, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

In 1991, Warren & Betty Burnside created the Burnside Foundation to award scholarships to deserving high school seniors and to students already enrolled in colleges and universities. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded a total of 2,218 scholarships, which equates to a total of $3,564,000.00 in financial assistance. These scholarships are renewable for up to four years.

This year the Foundation awarded 105 scholarships in the amount of $2,500.00 per recipient for a total of $264,000.00. In addition to these four year scholarships, a special $16,000.00 scholarship was awarded for $4,000.00 a year for four years. This is the second year that Tiffany Flanagan has received this $4,000 scholarship.

An eight member Selection Committee that is composed of educational professionals and guidance counselors from within Harrison County choose the recipients. The Selection Committee has established strict guidelines that are followed in choosing eligible applicants.

Selection Committee consists of Daniel Phares, Nancy Adkinson, Janet Wilson, Carolyn Light, Mickey Gerba, Marianna Kittle, Beth Fitch, LaDonne Wetzel and Ike Maxwell. The Board of Directors for the Foundation are Robert Tolley, James C. West, Dean Ramsey, John Westfall, Jean Hardesty, Robert Kittle, Harry Murray, Tim Whalen and Rebecca Wilson.

In an endeavor to reach all students, applications are mailed in the spring to Counselorss of each high school in Harrison County and are disseminated to high school seniors. Application forms are also available each January on line at www.burnsidefoundation.org. Anyone seeking more information about the Foundation can visit the website or call the Foundation office at 304-623-3668.
