By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on May 12, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com
The Mountain East Conference Wednesday announced its top individual award winners for the 2016 season with Shepherd's Tre Porter taking Player of the Year honors, and teammate Sam Crater earning Pitcher of the Year accolades. Concord's Trevor Wiersma was tabbed as the MEC Freshman of the Year, while West Virginia State's Sean Loyd was selected as the league's Coach of the Year.
The all-conference teams were also announced. Former Bridgeport High School standout Michael Logsdon, a senior at West Virginia Wesleyan, was named to the second team. He was a first baseman for the Bobcats.
Porter, a senior from Stephens City, Va., led the MEC in eight offensive categories this past season: slugging (.790), on-base percentage (.492), runs scored (58), RBI (58), triples (5), total bases (124), walks (34) and home runs (16). He hit .374 for the Rams and had a .944 fielding percentage at shortstop.
Crater, a senior from Dillsburg, Pa., was selected as the league's Pitcher of the Year for the second-consecutive season. He went a perfect 8-0 on the season and posted a 2.72 ERA. He tossed three complete games and struck out 34 in 43 innings pitched.
Wiersma, a freshman from Vancouver, British Columbia, hit .361 in his rookie campaign for the Mountain Lions. He belted 18 doubles on the year (second in the MEC), hit four home runs and drove in 47. Wiersma was also a first team All-MEC selection at first base.
Loyd is the MEC Coach of the Year after directing the Yellow Jackets to the MEC South Division title. WVSU went 29-13 on the year and 24-8 in conference play. Loyd coached eight players who earned All-MEC honors this year, including a league-best five first team selections.
The All-MEC teams and awards are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.
