Standout Bridgeport High School swimmers Becka Crandall and Logan Lehosit have moved on to Fairmont State University, where they are not only excelling, but also breaking school records.

At the Nov. 18 Magnus Cup meet at Cleveland State University, Crandall achieved two personal bests – freestyle and butterfly - and teamed up with Audrey Sweeney, Sabrina Buhagiar and Marlena Dudek to represent the FSU women in the 800 freestyle relay. The girls finished in 7:57.39, resulting in a new Fairmont State record.

Just a freshman, Crandall said she is very pleased with her first year on the Fighting Falcons swim team. Even though she swam competitively her whole life, this is a new experience, she said.

“College swimming is definitely a lot more time consuming than year-round and high school swimming,” she said. “You’re constantly forcing yourself not to hit snooze to wake up for 6 a.m. practice. It’s an everyday challenge, but it’s very rewarding. You make great friends and knowing that you’re putting all the hard work in to help out your team and better your times is definitely worth it.”

Crandall, who was first team Big 10 Conference and co- female swimmer of the year during her senior year at BHS, said she admits she was a little anxious about making the transition to college swimming.

“At first I was nervous that making friends would be hard, but I definitely learned quickly that it wouldn’t be an issue. I have such a great, supportive team that have all made my freshman year really easy to adjust to,” she said. “I was also nervous due to past swims during my high school career that I would be stuck staying at the same times and not bettering them, but I am very happy that I was wrong and I am slowly, but surely progressing.”

Lehosit – a FSU senior – broke the school’s 100 breaststroke record with a time of 57.16 in Magnus Cup preliminaries. In finals, he placed in the top 10 with 57.99 and was fourth in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 26.27. Also competing in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM finals, Lehosit finished first in the meet for the FSU men.

As a team, the FSU men wound up in 9th place at the Magnus Cup. The women concluded the meet in 12th place.

Earlier this season, the Lady Falcons won over WVU Tech and lost to California University of Pennsylvania and Shippensburg. They earned fourth place at the Mountain East Relays and sixth place at the West Virginia State Games. The men’s team lost to WVU Tech and Shippensburg, earned second place at the Mountain East Relays and fourth place at the West Virginia State Games.

The Fighting Falcons swim teams are back in action Dec. 3 at Davis & Elkins College. The team is coached by Patrick Snively. Among assistant coaches is Bridgeport’s Michael Walker.
