Representing colleges and universities from all over the state, faculty and staff at Bridgeport High School donned the colors of their alma maters in celebration of the CFWV’s College Application and Exploration Week.  The colorful display was one of many activities aimed at encouraging college enrollment and assisting parents and students in the processes involved.

 

The College Foundation of West Virginia has sponsored the event across the state for the last five years, with BHS Counselor Jane Byrd coordinating local events.  “We provided the opportunity for each senior to complete college applications and prepared them for post-secondary options,” said Byrd.  Information on essay writing, admissions standards and requirements were given to each student, along with scholarship connections.

 

All senior homerooms filled out college applications and were able to track the progress online.  “This process takes away some of the anxiety about the application procedures and scholarship opportunities,” said Byrd. 

 

The Harrison County College and Career Night was held earlier in October  at Robert C. Byrd High School with representatives from colleges, universities and technical schools around the state.  The College Foundation of WV and the Promise Scholarship Board were also available to answer questions.

 

BHS also gave students the opportunity to learn more about their teachers while earning a chance for prizes. Byrd arranged daily trivia about the teachers in order to showcase some of their unusual accomplishments while attending college.  Students who guessed correctly were in the running to win prizes and bragging rights. 

 

In addition to covering financial aid information, Byrd also raised awareness of the website, www.calendarwiz.com/bhsindians, which posts all scholarship requirements and deadlines for parents and students.  Juniors and seniors also took part in homeroom college search sessions and an assembly that helped them find the right fit for college.
