$1 Movies, Free Crafts and Physical Activites for Kids; It's All at Meadowbrook Mall this Summer

By Julie Perine on July 19, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

According to boxofficemojo.com, it was 1965 when a trip to the movie theater was $1. Cinemark 10 at Meadowbrook Mall has rolled back the prices for movie goers wishing to catch a children’s flick on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Young patrons and their parents or other adult companions can pay $1 per movie or purchase a Summer Movie Clubhouse punch card for $5, good for 10 movie visits. The featured movies are re-releases of previous box office hits. This week features “The Sandlot.” Next week’s featured movie will be “Norm of the North” (July 26-27), followed by “Shawn the Sheep Movie” (Aug. 2-3) and “MAX” (Aug. 9-10).

Those who purchase the Summer Movie Clubhouse card can take advantage of a specially-priced snack pack to enjoy during the show.

Tuesdays are special at Meadowbrook Mall for yet another reason. “Tuesday is for Toddlers” - a free program for preschool children - is still going strong, said Marketing Director Robin Urquhart.

“We try to offer a wide variety of activities for the toddlers and their caregivers,” she said. “We partner with mall retailers, outside organizations and UniCare (event sponsor) to come up with ideas and events for each week.”

For example, Lynn Menendez of the Harrison County YMCA contributes fun and unique ways to get the kids up and moving.

“Her visits are probably one of everyone’s favorites,” Urquhart said. “We also partner with the Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library, MedExpress’s Teddy Bear Clinic, Bridgeport ATA Martial Arts, Carrisa’s Caution and Hope Depot.”

Tuesday is for Toddlers meets 11 a.m. Tuesdays at Sears Court. Activities last about one hour. Although geared for ages 3-5, any children are welcome, Urquhart said.

"We get ages one thru 10 at various times of the year. We see a lot of older kids during the summer when they are out of school," she said. "We just tell the parents that they are welcome if they think that the child will enjoy the activity that day."

The program is always looking for new partners who would like to become involved. Those interested can contact the mall office at 304-842-5441, extension 0 and ask for Robin or Brandy.

July 26 – Carrissa’s Caution will teach the kids water safety through reading, dancing and coloring. Information on water safety will be sent home with the children.

Aug. 2 – Home Depot will conduct a workshop on a wood craft that will include painting. Snacks and drinks will be included.

Aug. 9 – Carrissa’s Caution will return with more water safety fun.

Aug. 16 – Bridgeport ATA Martial Arts will bring an obstacle course for the kids to play on and teach some martial arts moves.

Aug. 23 – Representatives of the Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library will be on hand with story time, crafts, games and sing-a-longs.

Tuesday is for Toddlers averages more than 60 participants weekly during the summer months, but even more come out during the fall and spring months, Urquhart said. Unicare Health Plan of West Virginia has been the event sponsor since the program began in 2012. The company liked the program so much that they became the sponsor of the same program at Huntington Mall, Urquhart said.

Meadowbrook Mall is hosting a July 30-31 Back to School event featuring Brendan Robinson of "Pretty Little Liars" on Saturday, July 30 and Peyton List of Disney's "Jessie" and "Bunk'd" on Sunday, July 31. Read more about it HERE
